Anyone know of a place for a variety of EE corms/bulbs?

I have some of the common ones Xan. Sag., Col. Esc....but how about others??

I just picked up one of the Xanthosomas at the asian market, called malanga. I don't believe it's sagittafolia, though. Keiko could tell you what I probably got. I find some of the common Colocasias at HD or Lowe's actually, when it gets a lot warmer. That's where I picked up Illustris, Black Magic, Fontanesii. I picked up Alocasia plumbea nigra at my local garden center. They were also selling yellow splash, I believe. Alocasia macrorhiza (upright EE), I got at the local garden center, too. I'd keep my eye on the big box stores for these.

Other than that, I shop at Plant Delights for the more unusual. They're too high priced for the more common ones I've mentioned. But, last year, I got C. esculenta 'Ruffles', C. gigantea 'Thai Giant', Alocasia wentii, and I bought a lutea privately.

I like A&b tropicals. www.aandbtropicals.com I used them last spring and the prices are good and the plants are packed well. In fact I am putting together an order myself to place in the next 3-4 weeks....Check em out

The area that I'll be planting in is an isolated wet area from a gray water drain outlet. The surrounding area should be rather dry throughout the summer growing season so I'm hoping to limit the EE's spread to along the wet ditch area. When I speak of a the drain it is only for a kitchen sink, dish washing, hand washing, vegetable processing, etc.,. It's not a tremendous amount of water but enough, I believe, to sustain a nice spread of EEs but yet limited in the area that is wet in a wait to restrain the spread of the EEs...I hope. :) I'm kind of worried about the state spraying the ROW...this area is near the highway... the southern/far end of the drainage may be just touching the ROW but hidden/shielded behind an old, overgrown fence row of privet hedge. The area where the ditch is has just had the brush cleared off (mostly privet) and is beneath a couple of large trees. It seems rather rich, though I'm sure it's weedy and viney. Being beneath the trees it's shaded during the middle parts of the date, getting good low-angled sunlight in the mornings and evenings. I would say the shading isn't complete, with some mottled sunlight coming through during the middle of the day. One question I have about the EEs is how concerned should I be about the possibility of them clogging the drainage ditch? This is really a small ditch, probably no more 10"-12" deep and maybe 12" wide...a new ditch cut when the brush clearing was done. The land slopes in the desired direction of the ditch. I'm thinking to plant the EEs maybe a foot to either side of the ditch and zig-zag the plants crossing back and forth over the ditch with maybe 3' between them. As for acquiring some of the naturalized plants. Would my best bet be to wait until after frost and over winter the bulbs out of the ground? We really don't have frozen ground around here in the winter but we will get frost and freezing temperatures that will kill or kill back tender plants. Or, should I go ahead and dig some while still growing and plant now??? Once planted I do not intend to dig them up for over-wintering inside so hopefully they will tolerate our temperatures. :) Thanks for any suggestions or recommendations!!! Ed

Anyone ever eaten a Musa or Ensete corm?

Interesting discussion. I am not sure about Ensete and don't know about making it into a flour. But the corm of a Musa is what you would probably consider famine food if you eat it with just cooking and no processing(although I don't know or heard of anything else you do with it). The closest thing to it would be a very very poor substitute for a taro bulb, stringy and not tasteful. Although other parts of the plant is considered quite good and a delicacy. The flower buds actually makes a nice vegetable depending on variety, some has a very bitter tastes, many of the Asian varieties don't. Considered an extreme delicacy and somewhat laborous to prepare is the false trunk of the banana especially considering that when you use it you're giving up the fruits it will bear. You must cut down a banana before it matures(and before it begins to send up its flower bud through the pseudostem) but large enough to provide enough of the pseudotrunk since your be removing most of the older petiole(is that what's its called) until you get into the very white pseduostem, then you would skin them to remove the fibrous parts. Slice the petiole thinly and you have yourself a very delicate crispy vegetable. It goes extremely well in stews also as it soaks up the flavor quite well and remains quite crispy even cooked. I think for most folks on this forum the thought of cutting down a banana for vegetable is a bit scary. =)

EE bulb barely growing, no leaves

butterfly, The first time I fertilized it was after I saw green growth (about a week ago). I used 10-10-10 fertilizer and was careful to keep it from touching the growth. After reading your post, I added a bit more fertilizer, probably 2 tablespoons. I don't know what kind it is. I bought it in a bag at the Durham Costco. Normally I'm good about keeping plant tags, but have misplaced that one. I don't think I threw it away but I did clean my desk. I could have put it anywhere in a place that would be easy to remember! I saturated the potting mix before I planted it and then watered it weekly, depending on rainfall. We have had a lot of rainfall over the past month. It never sat in water. I read somewhere not to water heavily until growth emerges. Maybe I didn't water enough before I saw growth? It is now 4 inches tall, so it is growing, but the leaf doesn't look as if it will very large after it unfurls. I do hope it takes off. I want to see those big, beautiful leaves. Thanks for your tips. I have followed them and have fingers crossed.

Lucy... I'm in zone 9 and have had the EE I've had in the ground at this house for 20 years--over that time we had several very cold winters and they all survived. I received mine initially from my BIL who lives in zone 5 and he did pull them out every year, just shook the soil off them--did not hose them down (it is supposed to do with the transpiration & the roots...and soil can act as an insulator??) and then he placed the 'extremely dry' bulb in a double brown bag and stored them in his basement. He has this awesome compost pile and his humungeous plants were over 6 feet tall and the leaves were so HUGE across the surface!!!! Remember the juice from EE can destroy a good shirt!!! Wow - great prices. I have forgotten about them. Are they in 4" pots? Some of them do not list the hardiness zones. Have you ever e-mailed them, and if so, do they respond quickly?

Ebay...check out Brians website when he starts selling stuff in the spring. Its called Brians Botanicals. He probably has the largest collection of Aroids in general in the USA.

No one's mentioned Natural Selections Exotics lately. They have some really nice ones. Send big healthy plants, and postiage is not at all unreasonable for the size of the plants they send (maybe not as large this early in the year.)

I was looking more for big swollen corms, that will start a much, much larger plant than one sold in a 4" pot. I have lots of Malanga also. It looks very close to X. Sagittafolia, but has a slightly dif shaped leaf, a little more quilted, and a purple-ish membrane on the petiole where the new leaf comes out. Beautiful, as is X. Sag. Is that the same as yours?

Did they have any other varieties at the asian market? How about purple sugarcane?

Some varieties of X. atrovirens often have petioles that are a brownish purple, especially towards the base, the lobes are less flared and the sinus is more closed than X. sagittifolium. This is different than X. violaceum with purple petioles covered with a lavender farina.

If you scrape through the two outer layers of skin and it's yellow to golden on the inside, it's X. atrovirens.

We can get these at large supermarkets here, but they are more common to Hispanic rather than Asian grocers.

Lowe's here often has many varieties of Colocasias propagated from tubers that look awful from being kept too dry and too dark, but they quickly recover and make large plants once set in the ground.
