my own coffee shop!

Big score for me. I pass a place called Common Ground every day that I work (4 days a week) and on Sunday. Last week I asked if I could have their coffee grounds. The manager looked at me as if that were the most natural question in the world, (although no one had ever asked before). I get one or two small covered buckets (from their muffin mix) every time I go in, and it literally takes me no more than 2 minutes! Big improvement over Starbucks in various supermarkets and malls, where I have to park, walk in, wait, and carry very heavy buckets (because I can't get there more than once or so a week) that I must supply. These small buckets from CG will serve as winter sowing containers, as well, with the lids modified. Wow, I'm so blessed!

You are to be congratulated, but when I first read the post I thought it was from someone who started a coffee shop just to get the grounds. Now that would be a true compost wacko.

Hi, Thanks for the comments. I hadn't thought about hanging it, but that sounds better than a fence. I don't really like the 'boutique' either. There are no hard to grow plants in the yard, but there may be when the cement pond is history. I've been looking up that plant called protea. A few of those may like it on the slope. June, I was thinking about you the last few days, wondering if you got back from Texas. The fence isn't done yet. I haven't been able to find the mis-mix for the final color yet, a sunflower yellow. There are 35 boards ready to hang except for that last coat. The rest are sanded, many are patched and some are cut out. A kid on my street made a little flier for the neighbors so he could work for summer money. Perfect timing. He's worked here for several hours and does everything I ask him to do. We're making good progress in the (long) side yard. That's where the metal is. Once that's done, most everything else is wood and easier stuff. We're still plugging along at the swap meet on Fridays. The mountain is a little lower that it was. I may even be able to make the demo date sooner if it keeps going well. We're going to Caliente, NV next week for a 2 day visit. I'm sure Caliente is a prime vacation area, lol. Email me when you get a chance. Linda

What do you major in if you want to own a flower shop?

Horticulture, specifically floral design. Exterior landscape design courses are also helpful, as are art history courses, color theory, and especially interior plantscaping. It would be extremely beneficial to get some actual work experience in a floral shop, as reputation is everything. Initially this is not a high-paying field, so do your homework, and create a niche with a product/service mix that is in demand in your area. Good luck!

Our butler's pantry is a walkway between kitchen and dining room as well. We will have a beverage center fridge, wine slots, cabinets to hold cocktail glasses and adult beverages. We will likely use the blank countertop space during entertaining as a buffet. We have another area in the kitchen designated for our coffee bar, otherwise it would be in there too! I'm sure someone else out there has been more creative than I!

I meant for the subject to ambivalent--glad you picked up on that!

This morning I came in to pick up 2 buckets, (and had a coffee as well) and asked if they used filters. She said they emptied the coffee out of the filters. I told her feel free to include them, as they would break down as well, and because I wanted it to be as simple as possible for them. I told her how much I appreciated getting the grounds, and she said she was grateful for me picking them up. Talk about a win-win situation!

Huh. I have a hippyish coffee shop in town that I should ask about this. The lady there is super nice, and I'm sure she'd love to save the earth :)

There is a small family-run coffee shop nearby, and last year I finally got the nerve up to ask for grounds. The manager looked at me a bit strangely at first, but they ended up giving me 1 or 2 (or sometimes more) five gallon buckets of grounds every day or two.

At first, the worst thing was that this shop had a staff of thousands! Every day when I went in, often at different times of day, there was a new face, and most of them in the afternoons and evenings were teenagers. I was a little embarassed, and always had to explain myself.

Then one evening when I went in for my grounds, a teenager I never saw before said, "Oh, you're the coffee lady!" and when I started explaining why I wanted the grounds, she nodded and said, "Oh yeah, those are great. My mom composts, and my aunt runs a dog-grooming place. My mom makes my aunt save all the dog hair for her compost pile. So I know where you're coming from." Hmm, suddenly, coffee grounds didn't seem so crazy, lol! I felt so much better after that - not only because someone understood me, but because someone was crazier than me too!

Careful what you wish for... LOL!! I did the same as you two years ago and am now picking up 300Lbs (approx.) on a weekly basis.

Oh, I'm not complaining mind you. There are many uses for UCGs and I think I've discovered all of them.

Besides, I'll be darned if those UCGs go to anyone else. They're MINE!!!! All MINE!!!! :)
