100 gallon tank on open stand, is it safe?
Comments (2)I have an older style 125G that I am setting up on a DIY stand made of 2X4's. It is a glass aquarium and has raised rim base. I am guessing that by "raised rim" you are talking about the base's frame supporting the glass bottom that elevates the glass bottom about a 1/2". Anyway, I had it filled for a week to check for leaks, no gravel or decor just water. The stand is just a 2X4 frame with no "top" on it yet. I did check to see how the glass looked and it appeared not to bow. Since it is raised I would care to guess leaving the top of the stand open would be OK. I however am going to use 3/4" plywood for a top for the stand. I plan on using 1/2" foamboard insulation to fill the gap and cushion any possible bow because it is going to have a deep sand bed and alot of rockwork for a rift lake setup. If there wasnt going to be alot of rocks I might not worry about any bowing of the base and go with an open type....See MoreNewbie-40 gallon fish tank terrarium
Comments (5)What are the wattages of your lights? What is the spectrum/colour temperature (in degrees K, eg. 6500K)? Exactly how tall is your tank? How old are the bulbs? A 40 gallon tall sounds like a very nice tank to make into a terrarium! I asked the questions above because we need to find out if you have enough light or not. Would you be able to add more light if you need it? I mean, is there space in the light hood, or do you know how to make your own light fixture? As for plants, think about what you like best about a woodland scene. Is it the lush greenery? The peace and calm atmosphere? Some obvious suggestions would be a fern or two and lots of moss. Interesting bits of driftwood are also quite nice, as are interesting rocks. Would you want a little stream or pool? Think about the nicest spot of forest floor you have ever seen, and make that the vision for your terrarium. BTW, I would go with a mini fern. This doesn't mean a fern in a small pot, it means one that is genetically predisposed to staying small. Even these 'small' ferns can grow to be 12" in height and spread. Nephrolepis 'Fluffy Ruffles' is one of these minis. You might have to order it on the Internet, so I've linked one place that sells it below. Do you like orchids at all? Not all of them look tropical. Paphiopedilums are low-light (for orchids), and are native to woodland areas. Do you have any other supplies so far? I would recommend a bark chip/mulch substrate. It's more open and airy than potting soil, and smells nicer, and Paph. orchids love it, as do ferns. It's important to have an open substrate to avoid root rot, which can occur when it is constantly moist, as it is in a terrarium. Other than that, read some old posts on this forum, check out the FAQ, and brainstorm! =) Here is a link that might be useful: Rob's mini plants...See More150 gallon tank turning in to terrarium
Comments (11)That's a nice sized tank for a terr! As far as plants go, it depends in part on how your tastes run and what look you have in mind. Tropicals are indeed the best/easiest way to go for most folks. There are several online vendors like Black Jungle and Josh's Frogs which sell plants that are supposed to be terr compatible. However, I find that most of their offerings get far too large and often far too quickly to be of any use to me. But then I want plants that will stay small without frequent pruning. I don't know if anyone in the exchanges forum ever has mini plant offerings. I know I sell off divisions of some of my plants now and then (many of the truly mini take quite sometime before reaching dividable size) but I've never tried out the exchanges forum. Here's a pic of my 90gal:...See MoreNeed craft idea to make from 2.34 gallon laundry soap jugs

For gardening I put a carpenters apron on it. put my gardening tools in apron and potting soil inside and put it on a plant stant with wheels. I made seats for kids. Painted them with krylon paint for plastic.Added a cushion on lid or you can buy bar stool covers, and put toys inside, For table took 2 buckets, filled bottom on with stones, cut out a piece of plywood in circle, screw it together from inside of other bucket, flat head screws, glued together with silicone glue and painted it with high gloss paint and put 3 coats of poly on it.put their names on each seat on side.
