New to tropical fish; info wanted please

Hello. I am currently cycling my first 35-gallon aquarium. I was told that buying fish online is really the way to go. Anybody do that here, and if so, could you direct me to your favorites? I'm also interested in live plants, so sites for those would be appreciated too.

Lastly......what websites are really good in terms of learning accurate info about the hobby of keeping tropical fish? I have found a lot of sites by searching, but what are the "biggies" that nobody should miss?

No local fish stores?? Have never been brave enough to buy fish on line which unless you want something really rare is too expensive especially when you figure in shipping.
Have always bought plants on line because local suppliers have a limited choice ,sickly plants or are too expensive or all 3 at once.lol
"Aquarium plant depot" has a fantastic choice as well as the quality is good.
There are tons of sites on the web for sure . Google Tropical fish profiles" Is this your first tank?? gary

Hi there. Yes, I have a local fish store, but with very limited stock IMO. We also have PetCo, PetSmart, etc. I just don't find the selection very great, and a I was talking with another customer at the local fish store, and she was the one who said the way to go was online. Huge selection, fish come quickly and healthy, and some have reasonable shipping. I am not finding that with my limited searching so far though. Shipping is like $30 regardless of size of order! Yikes!

I will check out that website for plants. I have only one right now, which is some sort of red crypt. It's pretty, but I paid $8 for it. If I want to stock the whole tank at those prices, I will go broke.

No, this is not my first tank, but it is my first halfway sizeable tank. I always had a 10 gallon, which I could never keep much going in past a year or so. I was always told by my LFS that the size is just too small to keep my parameters consistent, so I have a 35 gallon long tank right now. I am hopeful I can keep it going, thriving...

Thanks again for the site, and I'll post if I end up ordering online to let you all know how it went.

Gary: Tanks only. At only 12 x 16, a pool large enough to deserve the name would blow out too much of my floor space. I'd love to have one in my GH, but it will have to remain one of those things I can enjoy only seasonally, in the garden. The only solution I can think for your heat problem is what I'm planning for my own, because we get pretty hot weather here too. Abet it's for a shorter time, but July-Aug in the midwest can be literally, killers. You hit the nail on the head about the difference between heat and cold. Build a good one (mine is a Cross Country) seal it well and install a really good furnace, and other than heart failure over gas bills, it can be kept hot enough to grow orchids at -40. But I doubt AC is a practical notion for a GH so all we can do is use shade nets, ventillate, and run fans. However, there is one gadget that helps a lot. I have a large floor fan in the barn, facing the stall in which I keep a very old horse, who in spite of his desert heritage, suffers from extreme heat as much in his old age as I do in mine, so I bought a plastic misting ring that fits onto the face frame of the fan. The first time I used it was on one of those blistering days when the poor old thing would have otherwise needed a cold shower, but the cold water being misted in front of his stall, dropped the temp 20 degrees in just a few minutes. So I might get one for the GH, just in case. They are cheap enough. By only keeping aquatic plants in the GH for the winter, I hope to learn enough to risk some fish later, but I also sited it under some natural shade, so hopefully, when the next hot months arrive, I will have it all figured out. Frozen tank safe water might be a handy thing to have on hand, in shoe box sized blocks. Ice will pop out of plastic shoe boxes just like jumbo ice cubes. Then, just zip bag them and stack in the freezer. It helps keep the freezer from running as much too, by filling what would have been air space, with something solid and frozen. SW tank keepers use small fans in their hoods, to cool their reef tanks, so the same should work on a FW set up. LOTS of possibilities. But only testing them under real conditions will tell. What do you do to keep your Fla GH from becomming an oven?

I have to say I understand the reasoning for the larger aquariums, especially for very agressive fish, and many of those are messy eaters from my recollections of watching a large oscar eat snails many years ago. Uneaten scraps of any live foods or frozen foods would I imagine quickly foul any tank that wasn't a good sized one. Hoever since my space is limited and my floors of dubious strength to support a larger tank, as well as my budget not permitting some larger aquariums , there are "practical" limits how big I want to go with an aquarium. It still seems to me it's almost a "luxury" to have a 30 gal. aquarium with only two very small fish in it, but perhaps it's a wise decision. I just know I had many more fish years ago in both my 30 gal. and 55 gal. tanks and the fish were always healthy with frequent water changes and some good filters etc., though I didn't have the most agressive fish either, with a couple of exceptions. I must say however, though there may have been lots of the same information available in those days about "cycling" and "holding" capacity etc. I must not have done as much reading as I should have considering how many fish were in my aquariums, and in those days the average aquarium hobbiest, didn't even talk about water testing at all, and that was usually reserved only for salt water tropicals. I don't think the "tests" were even available in those days for nitrogen levels etc. I must confess however, water quality is sort of a gradual process sometimes and with slow changes it wasn't even apparent to me that my water had taken on a decidedly yellow tint over time, til I compared it to water right out of the tap, and it wasn't til then, that I began the frequent water changes. Oh well, you just hopefully learn as you age, and don't make too many mistakes over the years. I'd like to think, that despite the "practical" considerations I've mentioned, I still make my best efforts to keep my fish healthy, happy, and long lived for many years of appreciation. Perhaps I've misunderstood something along the way, but as I understand it , when someone says no more than two of any particular fish to a tank , they also mean not to include any other fish of any variety in the same tank, and that's were I see a very "sparse" looking tank where you have to hunt to even see any fish in it!!

This is similar to a stick I posted on the plant exchange, but a little shorter (70 cm or 28 inches): The stick came with instructions: I have not grown Dahlia imperialis before. I assume a cutting like this is the quickest way to a blooming-size plant. I picked up three today (presumably it's quite alive...) at the UC-Berkeley Botanical Garden. For those unfamiliar with the plant, this is the tree Dahlia which grows to 20 feet (typically 8-12 feet). It's a late Fall/Winter bloomer, so it can be tricky in places that get much frost. I already have access to a lot of people and places with interesting plants, so I'm pretty spoiled as far as my choices go. I posted a second cutting on the plant exchange. I have a third that I will keep and I'll start a post on the tropical section discussion to follow it's progress. I find this an intriguing way to start a new plant fast. I say that partly because it does not seem like a green, alive, flexible cutting, but more like a stiff brown stick. I do have other things I can root at this point: Deppea splendens, Agapetes serpens, Fuchsia boliviana Alba, Brugmansia sanguinea (blooming), Rhodochiton atrosanguineum, Dicentra scandens, Chlorophytum amaniense 'Fireflash', Philodendron 'Prince of Orange', Monstera deliciosa albo variegata, Homalocladium platycladum, Petunia exserta (seeds), Abutilon megapotamicum, Darmera peltata, Centaurea gymnocarpa, Isopogon formosus, Correa baeuerlenii, Iris confusa, Roldana (Senecio) petasitis, Correa baeuerlenii, Salvia wagneriana, etc...

Find a local fish society and join it! There are people in the group I've just moved away from who are professionals in one venue or another, amateurs with decades of knowledge, and newbies like myself. I have bought fish and plants at the monthly auctions - for FAR cheaper than either in store or online, plus no shipping fees... I have also gotten a world of advice from the people there, usually on our online forum, as the meetings tend to be hectic. One nice thing about buying plants at the meetings is that if they don't live (about half haven't made it in my tank) I'm not out a ton of money. My fish, on the other hand, have done wonderfully. Tap that wealth of knowledge and have a blast...

You say you are cycling your tank before you have any fish?
That's great! Its the best way not to stress the fish during the cycling process.

What are you using for a source of ammonia? I had a source at work for the pure stuff, but cheap sore brands work too. Are you monitoring the water? I checked mine (using strips and a Seachem Ammonia monitor) every day when I did a fish-less cycle, took about 20 days to get to zero ammonia and nitrites. I too added a plant from a very good LFS as starter culture.

As soon as I added the fish they ate the plant! (but my goldfish are 6 inches long.)
