Ok, as usual another storm rolls by and slides southeast. I'm glad I got 0.3" but just south of me got 0.8". Its happened all year (or it goes northeast).

In fact the last time my area got 0.5" or more of rain in 24 hours was LAST YEAR FALL. I've yet to reach 0.5" this spring and summer.

Curious if there are any other areas like this.

yep.. me ...

the storms either go north of me.. across the I94 corridor ...

or south of me.. across toledo ...

rained for 3 hours today ... ONE QUARTER INCH ... that isnt even enough to wet the mulch on top ... at least it was coolish .... relatively speaking ... and no blinding sun to suck it right back into the air ...

85% of rain in the next three hours..

cant wait for the other 1/4 inch.. lol ...

to sum it up ... mother nature is a bee-otch .. i hate her..

Got about 0.2" here. Not enough.

I'm hoping for a tropical storm with weak winds but lots of rain to hit the Gulf, that moves fast enough to not cause damage like Debby did, then rains itself out right over Ohio...haha.

I don't think you should leave the lime out. It has two purposes: 1) to raise the very low pH of the pine bark and peat, and 2) to supply calcium and magnesium that most fertilizers don't provide. Your hard water will take a long time to raise the pH. If you're concerned about it, you can add some white vinegar to the water to bring it down. You would need to test the pH of your water, then add vinegar a tablespoon at a time, and retest until the pH drops below 7. I have very hard water and all my clay pots have those deposits. I add a tablespoon of vinegar to my water when I can. I use a hose in the summer because I have way too many containers to water to do each one from a watering can every time. I really don't think my plants are suffering from the hard water. Check the pH of your rain water. It's likely to be better, but with pollution, it could be too acidic.

Yes, grading refers to the size of the plant when it was dug up to be sold. Grade does make a big difference in the vigor of the plant. I can make just about anything still alive grow, but not everyone can do that. I was rose buyer at a local retail nursery for a while. I did not buy in anything lower than Grade 1. People's success rates with grade 1 1/2 was much lower. They were cheaper, but not enough cheaper; and it's too discouraging to the average gardener to have a plant not do well. You paid money for it, and you expected it to grow and bloom. There's little consolation in it having been cheaper, and being a lower grade. It still disappointed you, and perhaps turned you off growing roses entirely. Our customers were much happier with Grade 1 roses. I have planted Grade 1 1/2 roses and had them do very well, after a couple of years. Never the first year. I've had more never do particularly well. They don't always recover from being the runts. The rose in your photo was probably a grade 1 when you bought it, but now that it's been in your garden grade doesn't apply anymore. Looks like it just plain didn't grow over the summer. Could be any of a number of reasons for it to not have grown, like not enough sun, not enough or too much water, not enough fertilizer, roots not spread properly when planted. The leaves look like they have drought scorch from not enough water, and the blackening on the canes suggests cane canker from incorrect pruning - leaving a woody stub with no bud at the end. When you prune, cut just above a bud. Woody stubs will just rot, they can't grow without a bud. Like any other living thing, roses need proper treatment all the time, and if they're allowed to weaken they may not be able to recover even if they don't die, they may live for years but never recover. If this one doesn't grow nicely next spring, replace it with a good quality plant.

Wow, never in my wildest dreams would I have thought you ladies would have loved this recipe so well or I would have posted this recipe ages ago. My sweet sister in law who lives in Washington D.C. fixed this little "cake" for us sisters in laws about 3 or 4 years ago and we loved it. I really thought that it was well known about until I had several of my friends over and we were suppose to have a get together and make something crafty...I am NOT a craft person so I thought of this cake thing that my sister had shown us several years ago so I did this recipe with the ladies of my group. The ladies had so much fun with this recipe, and were ooohing and aaahing...so the next day I gave you the recipe. I was surprised that it was not well known. I have now started using it with my husband and myself more again..as I had gotten burned out and I had not experimented with it like you have done, so I am taking some of your ideas and running with it. I use the large muffin paper cups for mine so I do not have any clean up. Someone had posted that there was spill over if you use the cup cake paper cups, but not if you use the large cupcake paper cups. I am tickled you like them. Thanks.

While Randy is correct, I think that what talley_sue_nyc is asking is if there is any other difference. What you need to know is that shower heads are flow restricted to 2.5 gallons per minute or less. Some of the low-flow units do a much better job of simulating more water - meaning that the spray pattern, droplet size, etc "feels better". Clearly this is a subjective issue, but there are some favorite low-flow shower heads out there.

Sounds like these isoloated storms are extremely spotty throughout the midwest then.

Its so strange to me to say that it hasn't rained a 1/2" yet this spring or summer.

Ken, I went and pulled back the 2" of mulch that I haven't watered near a plant and the soil was dry. So the foilage and mulch got watered. To your point at least the blinding sun isn't out today. I actually miss cloudy days now.

Where I live, Oakland County, Michigan, we seem to be in some kind of a "rain shadow" -- storms always track north across Genesee and Lapeer counties, or south across Wayne and Washtenaw. I think it has to do with elevation of the land and orthographic lift of the airmasses due to the elevation, since my area is 400 to 600 feet higher in elevation than the broad ancient lakebed plains all around us.

Today was very typical -- areas around us by about 30-40 miles got an inch or more, at the local airport here, 0.14".

I hate when my wife says "well it's better than nothing" when we get a 2 minute shower.

Actually, it's not...I have actually shown her that it's dry half an inch down to prove my point.

Yeah its not good when you get the foliage wet and the soil remains dry. Perfect condition for powdery mildew.

I'm game for a tropical storm right now.

Been very lucky here, over 1/2' just last week. Wish I could send you guys a couple inches.

Please no tropical storms!

Parents back in Jersey are just now getting their first 1/2"+ storm in about a month. Which is not crazy long but still... I expect to see green when I make my pilgrimages out of the desert ;)

I find it quite interesting to watch the radar and see these storms move around the city. When we lived in Indianapolis a general front would come through and flank the city to the north and south leaving a circle with no rain over the city. With these big general storms it would then back fill. (The circle would be centered on downtown not the radar)

We are now living east of Raleigh. Again the city is influencing our weather. Sometime the storms come in from the west hit the city and dissipate. Other times as a front comes through, when it hits the city rain forms over the city and does not hit the surrounding area.

Lines of storms have also come through the northern and southern parts continue east, but when the center hits the city, it dissipated over the city and reformed to the east of us.

I wonder if any one has tried to put the effect of the city heat engines into their weather forecast.

^ More chaos for an already chaotic process.

I don't so much care what happens or is happening here in town. But just 57 miles north of here lies my tree farm. That I care about. As it turns out, that is the very dividing line between the big midwestern dry blob and the more normal conditions to the north. Overall, that area has done alright. I rent some of my land to a farmer. He planted corn this year and already three weeks ago, that stuff was about seven feet tall, fully tasseled out, and looking great. Just the two counties to the south, down here, not so much. And we're hardly in the worst-hit area.

There are a ton of paper birch in my woods and in that area generally. These aren't the stressed out, borer-infested birch you see in some areas, but healthy vigorous plants. As an indicator species of a cool, moist environment, I hope they stay good.
