This is the part of winter sowing that I really love, checking for new sprouts everyday. I plant so many seeds that I get very overwhelmed when it is time to plant them. I'm taking a big leap of faith planting so many this year, I'm hoping that we will actually get some rain this summer.

These are what has sprouted for me so far, I planted conelflowers in containers on 01-12-08, but are the only ones that have not sprouted.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why all seeds have sprouted and the conflowers have yet to sprout? Have I missed something somewhere?

Also, now that the others have sprouted and doing well as of now..Can I transplant these in the ground now or should I transplant to larger containers? Currently they are in roasting pans with sm. dixie cups in the pans.
I just don't have any idea what to do next.

I live in South Texas and our weather is starting to get warmer now.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, being that this is the first time WS bug and I really have enjoyed watching my seedlings sprout.

Last year here in zone 5, the coneflowers were one of the last to sprout for me, and hollyhocks one of the very first. Maybe because they are perennial? Not sure.

I think our high temp on Saturday is only about -5. Still have a couple months to wait before that first sprout.
Oh well, my mother in law just dropped of 15 milk jugs for me so I guess I'll just have to ws those up and dream about sprouts...LOL

I wintersowed amaranthus in the beginning of January. The flat has sprouted already. We are still having freezing temperatures. What should I do????

Thanks for sharing what is growing... I think I will get my Rudebekia and Gaillardia planted. Soon we won't have very cold nights, but I am really struggling to come up with more containers. I think I will try some in baggies. I want to plant about twice as many containers as what I have so far, so I really need to find containers...and here I started saving them much earlier than the prior year!

Isn't it early, even for zones 7-8 (I don't know about 9)?

We have had a warm spell and I noticed a few tiny sprouts. If it stays warm as predicted for a few more days, I expect a lot more. I just hope it's not too late for my perennials. So far these have sprouted:

hollyhock
blue fescue
Livermore poppy
Gold yarrow

linda, this week in NC we are having very mild days and nights and so I have found that many of my containers sprouted early this year.

aniwag - if you are worried, try a light frost blanket or some kind of cover at night. Even though they reseed profusely, seedlings at this time could heal over if you have a hard freeze. I bring my containers in for the night if I feel they will be frozen. I never had a problem doing that - a garage would be fine. Good luck

and a couple others that I forgot

My main concern is with the vegetables. I think I will wait longer to winter sow them next year.

ptp813, I don't think you will have a problem with your spinach and broccoli. I have broccoli plants that I planted last spring. They have heads(not sure that's the right term) of broccoli on them right now that I need to harvest. They have been in the garden bed all winter without any type of protection.

All things are relative. When you folks in the Carolinas talk about a "cold spell" coming, how cold do you mean? Here in Ohio when we talk about a late "cold spell coming" we might be getting 20s, teens, or sometimes even single digits.

Our late freeze last spring (in April around Easter) registered 14 at my house.

Thank you, thank you, thank you all! I'm in zone 7, NC., just bought a small metal frame walk in greenhouse, & was wondering what seed I could start in there "this early". Had no idea what winter sowing was, can't wait to get started! You all have been so informative, I feel a bit more confident now. I feel good that I will have seeds to share with you this fall!

Karen, here in NC, we can get way down into the early teens - and we even get snow (and we are NOT near the mountains). Here in NC, we are known to have four true seasons - what is nice about where I live now is that spring does come earlier and fall a bit later - so our gardening season is a bit longer - but we DO get cold!
