Go to the service desk. Ask for the Zone 1 manager and tell him/her that you want to purchase something that's in the garden center. If he/she won't get it for you, ask to see the sales manager. Then the store manager. If all that fails, call 1-800-44-LOWES and complain. I bet they won't turn you down again.

And if they do get it for you, call that number and give them a compliment. :)

I solved this problem Tina. When I go to teach a garden class I bring the hand-outs and the seeds. The course host supplies the soil and the attendees bring in their own containers.

I no longer have the energy to lug around 40lb bags of soil, so the course host has to supply it. They always ask to do something anyway, so I tell them to bring the soil.

HD is closest for me, and they keep the entrance doors locked off season. But you can take a cart back to the garden section and bring it to the checkout in the main part of the store.

It's all I can do to lift 40# now plus when it's usually wet, I wonder if it weighs closer to 50#? Anyway, I get help at the store loading up and then I'm on my own. I can't carry it but a few feet then have to set it down and move it a little further.

My daughter picked up the last for me and parked on the side of the house. I got after her and said she should have parked where she wouldn't have to carry it so far. Oh, it didn't bother her. She carried it right around to where I store much of it on one side of the house.

When we had a thaw, I got the last bag in the house as far as the living room. I'll work out of it from there, yes I lay it down on a large storage lid so I don't get dirt all over, and then when I've scooped out about half of it, I can easily carry the rest of it on back to where the rest of my supplies are.

Thanks for your ideas. Token, I was in a time crunch and didn't have time to run down a person to let me in the garden center. Trudi, I am not only the presenter of the program on WSing but the pres. of the club and the "shopping" person so it's me who has to get the door prizes. Aliska, it is heavy! I may buy two of the smaller bags and give those, not knowing if a person will win who couldn't manage the big bag.

My walmart told me just before Christmas that they were going to sell soil all yr round. Now I notice the doors to the garden center are closed off. I dont know if thats temporary or not. I am down to about 1/3 bag for w/s.

In November, I went to buy soil at Walmart and the garden center doors were locked. It took almost an hour to get someone down to unlock them. I was extremely unhappy and that was putting it mildly.
Tammy, my Walmart brought bags of MG into the area where they put out the Christmas stuff. I don't even have to go out to the outer garden area. You might check.

Are we talking 1 cu ft bags or 2 cu ft bags. I lift 50 lb bags of dog food all the time. Thus, I know the 2 cu ft bags weight way more than 50 lbs. I can get them in the cart but can't lift them out. I have to buy the 1 cu ft bags now so they aren't stuck in my cart or my car.

I see my bags are 1 cubit foot! That doesn't seem right as I scoop out a dishpan almost to the top and that has to at least be a cu foot or more, but it isn't packed. I can get at least 4 or 5 dishpans full (I mix a small portion of something else in) from one bag of potting soil.

It sure feels much heavier. I could never handle more than that.

If one cubic foot gets to be too much (I'll check how MG labels theirs), I'll save used bags and work out of the back of my car, fill the used bag half full (or use a 5 gal bucket), then can clip the bags shut with clothespins or something and easily carry two of those but not at once.

Might check Sams store. I found some large MG bags in Springfield. Bags were clean and dry. Hubs was along to lift too.

If you have a local Feed and Seed type (usually a family owned) store try them instead. I have found that my local F+S stores carry potting soil and Pro Mix year round and they carry it out and load it into my car for me. Can't beat that.

Agway and Tractor Supply Company stores in my area usually have potting soil indoors this time of year and into the spring, near their seeds. I've started going there before I go to the big box stores.

I have two feed stores in my area, (one is closer, but its very disheveled , I prefer the other one)

Both carry Bales of promix year round, one is inside the other out, however the one outside will DIG out the promix for you , they enjoy the sales and leave the attitude that the lowes and HD will give you if you ask for dirt in the middle of winter.

A bale will do over 100 containers and all my inside stuff and usually a little left over.

I did notice that the lowes this year actually put thier promix inside near thier seeds for the start of the season. Very proactive of them... whoever that manager should get a kudos! Usually they dont think linear when it comes to gardeners!
