Safe driftwood for fresh water aquarium?

Hello:

I bought redwood roots and larger pieces from a 'shop' along the CA coastal redwood highway (on the way to Cresant city) this wood has been outside in the rain and sun for years some decades... is this safe for fresh water guppy aquarium.... also my ph in the tank (left over feeder guppies for two rescued turtles now going to santuary) and additional finer guppies) is extremely low. checked tap water (filtered) and it is low as well? About 5.5 to 6.0 on those little medical ph test strips? Is there another I should be using. The bottled spring water test a tad higher at about 6.00... but the conditioned water (came with aquarium set up) is abut the lowest or next to lowest on the scale. I read that adding would would allow tannis to lower ph? (already pretty low) Thanks for any suggestions/help. Sherry
