What happens to tree roots during droughts?

We're always admonished to keep seedling tree roots moist during the act of transplanting.

What happens to older tree roots.

Do the upper roots in dry soil die or stay alive during droughts?

If lower roots are still accessing moisture, does that then keep the upper roots alive?

Or do all the feeder roots die, and thus only the lateral mains and sub-mains remain alive?
