The move comes as Conard-Pyle, parent of Star Roses, is withdrawing from finished plant container rose production and Jackson & Perkins has filed chapter 11."

So.....I'll no longer be able to get Star Roses in containers at a nursery that I already had to drive an hour each way to get to?

The article says to contact Eastern Shore Nursery now to place orders for next spring, but they don't yet have a list of roses to choose from on their website.

Does news like this make anyone else nervous?

I think the test fields are moving to Ohio simply because Gardens Alive is located there and that is where their other R&D facilities are. Makes sense to have it all in one place - and saves money. Gardens Alive bid for J&P and even though their offer was, I believe, more than Blackstreet it was not accepted because they would not guarantee they would keep the all the jobs in South Carolina where Parks Seed and Wayside are. Too bad as I think they would have been better owners. Personally I think Weeks is in good hands. Garden's Alive have good people there who actually know something about the plant industry. Keith Zary is a good example. I don't know if Tom Carruth is staying with Weeks but hopefully he is. Christian Bedard also knows his stuff. IMO California mainly grows large roses because of Dr. Huey. It simply pushes larger plants. But Dr. Huey does not do well in my area (or most areas this side of the country) and keep in mind since it cannot be grown from seed RMV is a result of it being used. Personally I'd be happy to see it vanish as a rootstock. There is a lot of growing in Arizona these days and I suspect we'll see more there. And don't count out Tyler, TX. But I think in the end that won't matter. The trend is heavily towards own-root and towards liners finished in pots. Much of the public and quite a few garden centers don't want to deal with bareroots. At best I think we'll see one year field grown own-root crops for wholesale use but I'm not holding my breath on that continuing either. As to retail I think you'll see more and more 2 quart pots being used for mail order - even from the big boys. The traditional bareroot budded crop takes two years from planting to harvest. That means you are attempting to guess what the rose market will be in two years. Think of all those growers who planted crops in the winter spring of 2007/2008 for fall 2009 harvest and spring 2010 sales only to see the bottom fall out in September of 2008. By then the planting of the understock and budding (read the most expenses) were spent for a crop that was now likely going to never sell. With liner production you are almost producing on demand and that means you can react to the market far more quickly and keep losses under control. And conversely bring in larger profits if a rose, or the rose market, heats up. I think the changes in nursery ownership and nurseries closing aren�t the only big changes we are in the midst of. Paul

Well, I posted a message to the UofC in RIverside. It took them a bit of time, but yes, they did get back to me. I may call up the guy that replied to me and see what the Dean of the school had to say about the idea. Below is the posted message to them and their reply. I've got 2 Gabriels and 1 Eustacia... I wish I had 6... I used to have 3 Gabriels but my dog killed one and he's trying to get shot of Eustacia too... digs up half my garden in his old age.. If you don't like red, Gabriel is quite a striking red from a distance, deep pink close up, lilac edges... turns pink in heat... very beautiful rose...old rose scent.. Eustacia is Evelyn Mark II, no wonder they don't do Evelyn here no more, no royalties... I'm convinced similar Tamora line of breeding... Eustacia has the better foliage.. ... I wonder if Evelyn will get the boot in U>S. if Eustacia takes off.. ...best of luck with these two... You might be interested to know, Austins have developed a new breeding line of striped roses, bit like the painter's series, or Ferdinand Picard type... they are very pleased with what they have and hope one comes to market in a few years.... they also have some for florist roses... ...bit late to the party on that one, if you ask me....

I agree that all kinds of shrubs can be shipped, either bareroot or in pots, All the roses I first grew decades ago were ordered from catalogs and arrived bareroot. They all thrived, and I was a novice rose grower at the time. Roses want to grow. When I first moved here to my current home, the landscapers put in pretty basic stuff, except for the roses I selected. Then I ordered a number of flowering shrubs in pots from a very nice nurseryman on eBay. I received excellent Snowstorm spirea, Summer Wine Ninebark, several lavender Chiffon Rose of Sharon, and several Purple Emperor Buddleia (butterfly bush). They thrive to this day. These shrubs weren't dormant, however, but the shipping didn't hurt them, and they were reasonably priced. Today, I prefer local sellers for my shrubs because I know who to go to for the best quality shrub in the size I want. Diane

If you are a reseller, they want you for a customer, but they are filling a niche for roses for Mother's Day. That is potted roses in first bloom for Mother's Day.
I'd expect them to have a minimum order of several hundred plants.
Shipping charges are making shipment of potted, leafed out roses in several gallon pots very expensive. That market has declined. Learning to grow roses from bare-root plants planted in late fall or earliest spring may become a necessity for those who want a real choice in roses.

Yes, I gleaned that from reading the press release. My worry is that my "local" (laughing at 45 miles away being local) reseller won't have the same stock from which to select what they buy, or that somehow the supply chain will lose a link or two.

It's already a tough enough job trying to find a reseller in the area that stocks GOOD plants which are also zone appropriate, that are NOT knock-outs. I can't plant bareroots in fall, and being an accountant, March & April are my busiest months of the year. Spring bareroot planting is a goal, but realistically it probably won't ever happen in my yard.

I don't care to pay to have dirt shipped to me. I'd much rather see the plants in person & make my decision. I also think it's more fun to visit the nursery than to surf the web.... :)

With all of the challenges we face growing roses, I hate that the most challenging aspect of all is actually acquiring the plants. You have to admit that it's a major "barrier to entry", to use a business term, to get other non-rose growers interested and involved in rose growing.

Makes me a little nervous also. I've been busy with my minis since Nor East Closed. IF I NEVER SAW ANOTHER KNOCKOUT,or its offspring, would not bother me one bit! Took mine out of my yard and would not buy one if it was blue with yellow stripes! Just my opinion!

I know how you feel - I have to drive 3 hours to get roses. It's pathetic. However, my family lives there, so I'm not really driving that far just for roses. But it does annoy me. We have to go a couple weekends in a row, for me to get the roses I want. I am in a large city, yet there are no tender roses here.

Chuckles, lookin4u.....that was funny. It's so bad here that when my hubby & I walk into a nursery, if he sees nothing but Knock-outs, he immediately grabs me by the arm & escorts me out before I have a spastic fit.

Our best local nursery carried nothing but either Star Roses or J&P. That's why I'm having my spastic fit on here today.
