hedge plant recommendation please

Good evening everyone,

I need your advice. I would like to put a hedge plant rather than a fence. I've seen some pictures on the internet and also on other places in our area. They square the top part and my estimate is that they are like 2 ft wide but are 6 ft tall. What hedge plant can do well in full sun and also for my zone 5? Also, if possible, moderate to fast grower would be ideal.

I was actually looking something like the one below. What plant is that?

Or are there better hedge styles than the above? Is there something that looks like that but turns scarlet or red during fall?

I'd recommend summersweet clethra. It comes in white or pink, grows to about 5 or 6 feet and has fragrant flowers from about mid July to mid August. This plant has a very clean appearance even without pruning

Why don't you experiment this year: Try impatiens, they should be OK with shade, also the begonias. I would prefer impatiens since there are generally many colors to choose from. If it works you can do that every year and add some perennials every year: Hostas, lenten rose, astilbes all could be tried. Yew hedge is beatiful background for anything. I am just starting one and will be trying to find good companions for them also. So if you find a good one please post it with a picture.

Growth will be less dense in significant shade - a problem you will have with anything, even more shade tolerant kinds such as yew. 'Smaragd' does have the particular limitation of being more prone to root rot than is usual for T. occidentalis cultivars - this is avoided by not planting where water puddles or the soil becomes otherwise boggy for extended periods. Those instances where you see a section (several plants together) of a 'Smaragd' hedge having gone brown there will likely be this or another environmental issue at work; after recent summers it could be drought much of the time, as even comparatively young or recent examples of the native, locally adapted T. plicata in sunny locations have been showing damage from this.

welcome to the forums ... i need a pic to understand it all ... surely you dont want to remove those that are there ... but on the other hand.. i dont understand why you would want to match them ... perhaps the solution is much easier than you are thinking ... where are you.. z6 is about half the US and very divergent ... conifers are trees.. and basically never stop growing.. especially at some magical height ... ken

The photo looks like boxwood (buxus). It's an evergreen and easy to keep sheared like that. Someone else will have to take the part about red foliage. You're too far north for me to advise.

the red foliage comes from either euynomous or barberry. Both have their drawbacks...euynomous being that it's not "dense" like boxwood is and the barberry can get weedy and it's very stickery...has thorns.
Privet is another for your area that takes to close shearing.
Another is arborvitae, fora sunny spot and yew for shady areas.
The thing to remember when shearing a hedge is to always make sure the top is a little narrower than the bottom to allow sun to reach the bottom so it doesn't get woody and lose the leaves at the bottom.
