Seems to apply to the subject of CC as most Americans cling to the early propaganda sponsored by the likes of Exxon/Mobil and others. That cost us years in facing up this this problem. It is no longer a glib answer.

I suppose they said the same thing when the dustbowl happened back in the 30's.
I believe its the "fear" of climate change that is happening, more than the actual change of climate.

The weather is not unpredictable in Oklahoma. It's not going to drop to below freezing in August, or hit 100 F degrees in January. I'd bet the farm on that one. As for CC, well they tried the terminology Global Warming but that didn't fly very well in winter, so now they are upping the ante by calling it "climate change". Reminds me of the controversy over Intelligent design vs. Creationism. Same box different wrapping..... There does seem to be some relevancy as to where you live and what you buy into however......Broke my own rule. This is a definite OT post and shouldn't be responded to on this forum. Sorry I bit.

I got lots of rain here this past week Jim. I am up here 2 counties north of you Jim (Warren). Having it rain so much has caused one of my roses ,(Intrigue) to get black spot. I mention this because it is my only rose that I purchased from a zone below me. ( From a nursery down 9h just north of Livingston.)

Y'all who don't think there are changes in the climate -- we could use a few fresh firefighters,
out here in California, in our record-setting drought, with our record-setting number of wildfires.

Our summers have grown hotter, and drier.
Our winters colder.
But we are seeing broader changes, now, requiring different ways to approach living here.
The important changes are in the temperature of our ocean currents and the shifts in the jetstream.
They control the failing winter rain, and the decreasing moisture in the Sierra Snowpack.
We take it fairly seriously.

At the risk of beating a broken drum. If this isn't climate change then the new ice age isn't far off. Or is it an increase in cosmic rays?

Anyway in my part of the world we continue to see very unusual weather. I feel as if I'm still in Southern California! Cool nights and hot days. Cloudless skies. No rain for days, well at least in that respect we're different. In CA it doesn't rain for months.

For the first time I've experienced a wilting rose. For the first time in my 16 years here I'm facing a real problem with the availability of water. Which is not curable by just turning on the tap as we are on well water.

And the change has also changed how my roses grow. What used to be reliably repeat bloom from roses has instead brought fewer blooms. And I think caused spent blooms to dry up and brown more severely.

And next winter is apt to be much colder than before a change in recent winters which have been warmer. Why? Possibly it's the shift in the Gulf Stream which has brought us cooler nights.

But who knows! We'll have to wait and see.

Forget about whether you beleive in Climate Change or not BUT, something weird is going on here.

August has always been the hottest most humid time of the year. It has not been. All month just not a day or two. Cool nights clear days but very hot. Dry air.

Thunder storms, horrific ones, when it rains. Just days after a down pour the ground beneath is dry. Something typical of CC. The dry air pulls moisture from the earth, collects it in the atmosphere and then drops it again probably somewhere else.

I mean I love the weather. What could be better than cool at night and sunny and hot during the day.

I suppose it is normal to worry about what comes next. Frigid winter? As payment for nice now?

Here on the coast of Oregon we usually have 4 months of sun-sun-sun with low humidity & no rain. I live for those months out in my rose garden. With no rain, & no storms to break them down, my roses absolutely thrive. But this year we have had an awful lot of mist & fog. Last week we even had a storm, typical of what we might expect during the winter months. People that have lived here all their lives say they've never seen anything like it. I'm kind of bummed - I was hoping we were moving into a warmer climate shift.

I must be different than most.
I believe in Global warming, climate change, and human kind's influence on weather patterns and the environment.
I do what one person can to lessen my impact on these changes. I don't drive near as much as I once did or use pesticides. I recycle, try not to waste, and do what I can to lessen my energy use.
In the process I save a few bucks.
I discovered years ago I cannot do anything about the weather.
Complaining about it does nothing to change it.
I listen to the forecast each evening and use it as a guide, not a bible. It is what it is when I wake up each morning and look out the window.
Like diggerdave, I find beauty in what nature provides and don't complain or question why things are not as I would want in a perfect life.
Quit your belly aching and trying to find excuses for everything that's wrong in your life.
Accept what you have and cherish it. Make the most of it.
We complain about stupid things while in other parts of the world people are dying because they happen to be a different religion, race, nationality, or just in the wrong place. Others don't know if they'll eat or have water to drink tomorrow while we make fuel with food and pour water on our plants for decoration.
We throw away more than the rest of the world eats.
So come on, enjoy life!

I've been reading Jim's posts for a while now, and thought them too whiney to even respond to. The only thing that seems to be changing is Jim's larger than life amount of pessimism...it seems to be getting worse. Can you post just once on a happy thought, Jim? It seems to me that every aspect of rose gardening makes you exceedingly unhappy..the weather, too much sun, not enough sun, too much rain, not enough rain..and on and on..perhaps rose gardening isn't for you..perhaps a hobby in doom and gloom would suit you better?
It is the mark of a childish person to attack another forum member because they do not agree with you. I think it was rude and mean spirited, and you owe diggerdave an apology, and it wouldn't hurt to rethink your attitude while you're at it.Try, just once, to post a happy thought..the ice caps won't melt, I promise.
This is the link to the National weather service's record of high's and low's in Upstate New York..note that August in our region has had highs in the 100's and lows in the 30's...and our average rainfall for August is 3.65"..these are avereages Jim...some years colder, or hotter for decades..
The averages I would be looking at if I were you would be the average life span of a chronically pessimistic person, and how much sooner your own self induced misery will cause you an early demise due to a stroke or heart failure..but maybe that will be the climate, too, right?

Donna - I take offense to your above post saying Jim is just doom and gloom; bring up Kordes and I can see the joy in his eyes from NY to here in Michigan!

And you Digger - I see the Kordes rose in your above pictures!Don't you know its the Kordes rose THAT is causing the rest of your roses to look so good. You see, Kordes roses are so superior to our inferior american-bred roses that simply through the process of osmosis the american-bred roses grow better! I'm surprised you did not know that.

Diggerdave, your rose garden looks amazing. I can see the work that you have put into it. You have earned yourself a fan.

I appreciate Jim's dry wit. A bit disconcerting,but honest.

There are two excellent documentaries about Climate Change, The Inconvenient Truth and The Eleventh Hour. Watch them! Until you do you will believe that all sorts of natural phenomena that have happened before are the cause of the melting of the ice caps and unusual patterns of weather.

Both movies prove beyond any doubt that Climate Change is a fact. The worldÂs climatoligists agree on this. Not one dissenting opinion. That is by scientists. There have been many efforts to cast doubt sponsored by Exxon Mobil among others. The titles of both movies tell us something about the "climate" on this subject, one the truth about CC is an inconvenient fact facing our commercial culture and the other, the 11th Hour stresses the lateness of our response in facing this problem.

If I show little tolerance for the uninformed opinions expressed here it is because there are that: uninformed. And that we face the most serious problem perhaps in human history. And we as a nation are doing little about it. Which is the main reason for my pessimism. No amount of advice on my personal outlook will fix that.

Everyone who grows roses needs to be concerned as our favored plants are threatened just like all of us.

Personal responsibility and how it can and does effect our surroundings. My thoughts? Those of us who garden whether it be roses or hydrangeas or tomatos do so for various reasons, to raise something beautiful ,the itch to feel soil between our fingers or to help sustain us. It answers an inner need.
I do think there have been some climate changes and they do seem to have not been for the better. Some of this might be natural and some of it is no doubt hastened by our ignorance.

Me, I don't care if you don't like this rose variety or that rose varitey, I don't care if you don't approve of purchasing roses from one place over another, body bag or 3 gallon specimen shipped from Timbuktu.

What I DO care about is someone who because they have to have beautiful perfect roses, knowingly sprays or treats them with something either potentially or proved poisonous and INSISTS on doing so to the detriment of the enivonment.

That to me is selfish.

My gosh!! Who doesn't talk about the weather? People have been doing that for as long as I can remember. It affects our lives a great deal. I don't think deep discussions on Global Warming & Climate Change belong on this forum. But casual references to how "weird" the weather is behaving, & how it's affecting our beloved roses, is just normal human chatter. That's been going on forever.
