Climbing combo? Don Juan & Red Cascade

Don Juan (on Fortuniana) is naked, and I was wondering if I could set a pot of Red Cascade at DJ's feet and let it climb up on top of DJ. Red Cascade is supposed to be very healthy. (I'd love opinions on this from the humid south.) I was thinking that DJ's big red blooms and RC's small red blooms and abundant foliage could make a good display. I know this would hamper air circulation for DJ - but really, he's already naked.

Any thoughts?

I think it might be worth at try. My RC is in a pot, placed on top of a cinder block and cascades down, and tangles into my jasmine -- it seems to be thriving in the heat out there.

RC grows very well here in Texas. Its usually sold along side of the antique roses in the nursery's, I like that. I call that a stamp of approval.

I would love to see pictures if it takes off into the other rose.

My neighbor has Red Cascade all over her fence, and talk about healthy and vigorous. I don't think she does anything to it, ever. I need to get some more starts, I've heard it is very easy but I managed to kill the cuttings I took.

I had a red blaze that looked practically dried up when my Mom purchased it on sale at Wal-mart in late spring and gave to me. I planted it with some good amended soil and gave it just some reasonable care. By summers end, it had climbed the deck railing and bloomed as if it were the healthiest rose in the nursery and wintered West Virginia highland winter without so much as additional mulching. It had no bug or disease problems and was beautiful. My Mom had one for years that got very little care after my Dad passed away and it just kept growing and producing. Great rose.

Frankly, Don Juan, a climbing hybrid tea, probably won't ever be cane hardy here unless you go through extraordinary measures to winter protect them. I personally don't have that kind of tolerance for protecting roses, so I've chosen the route of the super-hardy climbers and shrubs. Some great hardy climbers for our area: John Cabot Victorian Memory/Isabella Skinner John Davis (small Climber) William Baffin Some also claim New Dawn and Vielchenblau do well here but I haven't personally tried them. I have no comment to 'Don Juan'. But I live in zone 5a, same as the original poster, and never had luck with the normal climbers being sold. But then 20 years ago I bought a Canadian bred climbing rose. That one must want to be 12 ft tall every year, and I have to always cut it back. In late May it will be a mass of red flowers. Jungs was also selling a less vigorous kind of it, have that too. I forgot the name, might be John Cabot. Yes, it is beautiful! I grew Don Juan for years, but the area it was growing in became too shady and it was time for it to go. My Don was fragrant, but not as fragrant as many other roses. Also in cool weather it was very dark red, almost blackish, at the base of the petals. Also while listed as a climber it had very stiff tall canes and would stand on it's own. Only after it became very tall did I use some rebar to stake it. But yours may become more rigid with age. The shape of the leaves and thorns are often as telling as the flowers as to the ID and since I don't have it anymore I can't say for sure about that, but they look right as I remember them. As Sylvia says the rose folks could probably tell you. But then you know what they say -- "A rose by any other name ..." In this case, no matter the name -- it is lovely, but it might be fun to know for sure. Include these photos and some closeups of the leaves and thorns when you post over there and let us know what they say. You could try either Name This Rose or the Roses Forum .

Well, Redbird, that sounds like a pretty good endorsement since you and I share humid conditions. I'm glad it does well in Texas, blackcatgirl, but I think you're drier than me. At any rate I think I'll try to pick up 2 on Saturday.

I am doing just that, but with some other rose combinations... I do, however, have Red Cascade intermingling with Alister Stella Grey AND a blue AND a white clematis...Overkill?

FWIW... you really won't know what's going to happen in your own microclimate until you try it yourself.

Now...from a different standpoint. I will say that I don't always like different "reds" together. I don't know if I would like or hate RC and DJ...sometimes different reds together are unappealing to me..put some of the flowers together and see what you think.

I'm using some Barbier hybrid wichuranas to provide leaves for my otherwise naked roses: Sombreuil, Parade, Secret Garden Musk Climber, etc. I think it looks cool.

I think it sounds interesting. I don't have Don Juan but from what I remember it would go well with Red Cascade.
