Managing Glads among the Roses

I was just perusing Masha's blog (where I can't figure out how to comment), and her approach to color and interplanting is exactly what I do or at least aspire to. One of the pictures included some gladiolas, which reminds me that over the past few days I've pulled up several clumps because I simply can't figure out how to get them to stand tall between the roses. They always seem to fall over and make everything look slumpy. I love a lot of chaos, and I enjoy the drama of the glads, but the fallen over glads just annoy me no end. What I've started doing is moving them all to outer fences so they will have something to lean against or be tied to, but I'm wondering how any of you deal with them among the roses etc.

This is a zone where they can just be left in the ground all year round, and I'm wondering if part of the problem is that they multiply and then are too close together which makes them each push each other over? Maybe replanting them farther away from each other each season?

I dunno, so I'm askin'
