New to wintersowing -- which seeds to wintersow?

I came across this technique very recently. I would like to try wintersowing this year. Which of the following would be safe to do so?

You can start everything on your list now, except

Zinnia
Sunflowers - Mammoth (not sure on this one)
Lavender (depending on variety?)
Marigold
Nasturtium

Black Eyed Susan Vine
Egyptian Pea Vine

Jalapeno Peppers
Green Peppers
Sweet Pea
Coriander
Sweet Basil

For those, you might want to wait a bit - maybe next month or so.

I think I'm newer than you, and very wet behind the ears - lol. What is everyone doing here? Are you planting seeds indoors or outdoors? If the former, where do you find the room? What kinds of containers are the favorites? Do you need "special" dirt? Do you thin them? Do you have to wait till like April or May to put them outside?

Hi Amy, I do not know about how much winter is required for Rosa Rugosa seeds to germinate, but I can share my experience. I live in Virginia and I winter sowed some Rosa Rugosa seeds In February 2004, and they germinated that spring. In March of 2006 I sowed some Rosa Rugosa Alba, and they did not germinate until February of 2007. My recommendation would be to use a large container just in case you need to hold the container over the summer. Good luck, Kathy

Perhaps you should also try growing vertically? Utilize your balcony walls if you can? To maximize growing area you can use hanging baskets and growbags, just hang them on the walls or over the railing. Also tiered plantstands are great. You can grow a lot more than you think! lol. Check out the beebs site, they have a great gardening page...www.bbc.co.uk/gardening Found an article on 'growing bags' as i'm interested in using some this year, just type 'growing bags' on the search box. You can also make your own, just google it. As for plants to sow i would also suggest some long blooming annuals and herbs. Hope this helps. Btw, i do love your city, not to mention its wonderful parks and gardens.

Today, I filled 15 (4 in. pots)with BES seeds from my own plants last year. Wrapped them into a plastic bag that our new cross cut shredder came in. poked holes in plastic for air and put them behind the forsythia bush. They will still get light but not direct sunlight. Will watch them for dryness and bottom water them if needed. I soaked the seed potting mix and let it drain, then sprinkled last year's seeds on top and took a jar and press down lightly, then used the misting spray on the hose and wet them down some more, let that drained and put that plastic bag over them. Before that I planted 12 (4in) pots with prairie sun rudbeckia..I got the seeds from Park's and it was supposed to be 25 seeds in each pkt. and I really don't think there was a total of 25 in both pkt. They were too small to count. I put sugar in a spice jar and sprinkled them but think I had too much sugar. We shall see! Ran out of potting mix and had to go to garden center for another brand. Wanted Fafard what I had before and they just had the container mix and man who appeared to be a boss said that would be too heavy..talked me into Hoffman seed starting mix..we will wait and see how well that germinates. My favorite garden center called me this afternoon, they are expecting creeping phlox in toward end of week, and Salvia May Night or Cardonna may also be on that truck. They take request and call you saving you run all over the county..I'd rather buy from him than conglomarate HD..He brother started this garden center/farm market and he bought it from brother when he moved to Arizona or Colorada. Everybody loves their plants and they have quality plants and great customer service and knowledgable people that work there. Just learned about their request book last week so that may be the way to go from now on out. Bought some mountain blue and yellow starfire columbine seeds today(Renee's seeds) at the garden center where I got the seed starting/potting mix. $1.89 each..2 pkt. each color.

Hi, Ken, Well, interesting points. I know some of the genetics that you're referring to, from this forum and other sources. Wintersowing is basically creating individual mini greenhouses for seeds rather than directly sowing into the ground. Put them out and forget them until the spring when they sprout. I plan to do the hosta seeds mostly for the enjoyment of it. I've read of others here that plant their seeds indoors in the winter for spring planting. Wintersowing eliminates the need for indoor space and lighting. Sometime last year our Hosta Society had a speaker (I think it was Bob Solberg) who suggested that if we run out of room for new hostas, dig up the ones you can live without and plant the new ones there. I earmarked several plants and had folks lined up to take them when (unbelievably) my husband told me I could NOT give them away because they were so beautiful!! (They are mostly undulatas from my early years of growing hostas). I found space elsewhere, lots of space, and I would like to put my seedlings there for now, to help fill it out and to save some serious money. I can always move or give them away down the road. As you know, most folks only know of the "green" and the "green and white" hostas, and are happy to give them a home. Also, a friend has a landscaping business and will happily take any seedlings I give to her. Again, to lots of folks, a hosta is a hosta. ...And who knows, I may end up with something unique! And it gives me some gardening to do in the winter. Vivian

oceanna - we plant seeds outside in all kinds of containers. Recycled milk jugs are the favorite, I think. No special dirt - just potting mix as opposed to soil (altho some members do mix their own). We start on the solstice in December ....

I am in Northern Virginia. Thanks, PV. I will be sowing these tonight.

oceanna, I am planning to use empty milk jugs, take-out containers, and some rubbermaid plastic that I no longer use. I will use the leftover soil from last year - it is nothing special and says on the packet it's ok for sowing.

I'm excited about this. Last year I started tomatoes & bellpeppers indoors but the bellpeppers didn't make it outside, and while I got few good tomato plants, they didn't give a lot of tomatoes. I lost atleast fifty tomatoes to frost :( Hope this time will be better because the seedlings will be hardier due to wintersowing. Wish me luck!!

PV, I saw I need to wait for peppers. Next month, should I be wintersowing them in containers or just direct sowing outside? Thanks a lot.

Shalini - I grow exclusively in containers, so I'm not the one to give you advice re: direct sowing. I can tell you that peppers don't really get going until the weather/soil warms up; some people start their peppers indoors because they don't have a long enough growing season for starting outdoors.

I WS mine outdoors in March; I don't usually start getting ripe peppers until August or so, but they will bear for me until the first really hard frost. I've been known to bring the plants indoors near a summy window to let any baby peppers grow on.

I think it all depends on what kind of yield you're looking for. Hopefully, someone who has ground to grow in will answer your question about direct sowing.

I'm a newbie too, from Northern VA. Where are you located? I'm in Herndon. I've just started WSing my spring veggies, but ran out of containers, so need to wait until I get more.
