Austins, light shade

According to DA's catalog, they list as good for shady positons (3-4 hours of sunlight) 'the more vigorous English Roses.' Does that mean the ones that get huge? Which Austins do well for you in more shaded positions? Or for that matter any other rose? Keep in mind that we have very intense sun here so many plants do better with some shade.

Abraham Darby does much better for me in light shade than it did in full sun. Same is true of Sharifa Asma. I will relocate WS2000 in a shadier position in fall - maybe the flowers will not turn to pink. Right now WS2000 is not even close to be a 'red' rose but has more blackspot in full sun than A. Darby in a shadier spot.
Prospero also blooms well in a less than full sun location.

Teka...is that direct sun?? and is this morning or afternoon?? As you say our sun here is intense. I have found alot of them do quite nicely with only a few hours sun. In fact I wouldnt be afraid to try any Austin in those conditions.

Have you thought about putting some hydrangeas in that shady area? Most love some morning sun as long as they get shade during the brutally hot part of the day (which is after 2:00 during July-Aug. in my Midwestern zone 6). Limelight is a nice macrophylla hydrangea. But I also like Annabelle--which is a different type of hydrangea and can handle a bit more sunshine than the macrophyllas. (The paniculata hydrangeas, on the other hand, can take almost full day sun.). I'm a big fan of hydrangeas and there are lots of lovely macrophylla hydrangeas out there--some supposedly re-bloom. They all bloom for at least a month--sometimes longer--and the bush looks nice all season. They are very showy in bloom. Kate

Best Austin for large pot in partial shade

Not sure if it can live in a large pot (would have to be considerable) but I can vouch that Golden Celebration has been a ridiculous bloomer in less than part shade. There's so little sun it has become quite leggy and leaning, yet it is covered with as many blooms as some of my roses in full sun. Just amazing.

The one in the full sun spot does get some blackspot, more in some years than others (like this year when we have gotten way more rain than usual). But it keeps most of the leaves and overall the bush looks good. I would recommend it for a no-spray garden in conditions like mine and since you spray maybe it wouldn't have any disease at all. In my garden there are only 2 roses so far that get NO blackspot. The rest get at least a little bit at certain times, but the full sun Heritage is one of my healthiest. More reason to love it.

Since this is a new rose bed that I started last year, do you think I should focus on only purchasing the bigger bushes that will go in the back (I want a full lush David Austin, English garden look) unless I see something I can’t resist, or just buy what I love and place smaller in front and hope I’ve left space accordingly? I hate to have to move them around. Also, regarding companion planting, do I wait till I get most of my roses in place? Although those can be easily moved in winter

Go for it!!! I try any Austin rose in partial shade and
they do well. I have eight of them, six in partial shade,
and they are healthy and growing nicely. The only one I'm
having a little trouble with is Harlowe Carr. So that one
is being moved to full sun. I think in warmer climates,
they don't mind half a day of shade.
