'Teaming with Microbes'

I just finished reading this book which my horticulturalist sister has been recommending to me for some time. It was interesting, and it made sense, as its theories are consistent with the development in nature of successions of ecosystems (my terminology may not be correct here): I mean, for example, the sequence on a given piece of land of weeds changing to grass changing to brush, to young woods to mature woods, if there's no drastic interference. The book also reassured me, and pleasurably stroked my vanity, by confirming by and large my garden practice of fertilizing by piling organic mulch on my beds and recycling every bit or organic matter the garden yields. (I mean that this is a valid strategy in my situation, not necessarily universally so.) I would like your opinions, from those of you who are familiar with the book or its ideas, about the practices its authors recommend.
