though i am loathe to recommend fertilizing trees.. but fruit is the one place where it can be beneficial ... since its a production tree ...

but that said.. tree spikes are just about useless ... how do you even know.. if there was a root near where you pounded it in????

have a soil test done.. to find out the base of your soil as related to fruit production ..... and then act accordingly.. really.. no guessing ...

IMHO.. if they are near a lawn that is fertilized.. most likely they will not need much else ... especially if you were to use a more general lawn fert .. rather than high nitro ... 39-3-3 isnt going to be helpful to a fruit tree ...

all that said.. pretty fruit has NOTHING to do with fertilizing.. its all about a spraying protocol.. usually involving 3 to 5 sprayings per years.. over the various seasons .. and that is why.. i do not waste my time.. nor health on PRETTY home grown fruit ...

home grown fruit need not be 'pretty' .. to be useful ... again.. IMHO ...

but that is your call.. as to how aggressive you want to be with your integrated pest management [IPM] ....

Pears with no taper, small? Look for the Seckle varieties.

Want to add. Fertilizing pear trees causes rapid growth which invites aphids that carry Fireblight. Pears are especially suceptible to Fireblight. If you need to fertilize, do a soil test and don't give it any nitrogen unless your soil is a sand bank.

Might help *some* if we knew where you are located - for instance, if you're in The South, it's probably not Bartlett or d'Anjou. Fireblight would make short work of them there.
There are hundreds of named fruiting pear selections, with a wide variety of shapes and sizes - and some look virtually identical to one another(often because they are parent/offspring). Hard to say with these developing fruits - final size/shape may be somewhat different from what you're picturing now.
Most European pears and some of the hybrids need to be picked while still 'green' - otherwise, if left to 'ripen' on the tree, you end up with them 'rotting' from the inside out - as you've already discovered.
Once you feel a slight 'give' when you apply pressure to the fruit just at the stem end, it's time to pick them and put them in cold storage for at least a couple of weeks, bringing them out a few at a time to 'ripen' for a day or three before consuming them.

I don't fertilize any of my fruit trees - and don't do any sprays(I don't have the time or inclination); the apples are usually pretty crappy, but the pears, most years, produce >90% perfect fruits, and often more than I can eat, dry, or give away.
