A Tale of Three Trees or Lumberjacks we Aren't
Comments (5)The DH and I have had our own share of 'tree adventures'. I figure I have planted close to 150 of them in the last twenty years. I have also been on the end of the rope with instructions to pull it in the direction it should fall. LOL. It's been a good learning experience. I now know when one is planted where it shouldn't be to get it out of there before it's two stories tall. Our household budget also has a large allowance for tree care, and all the guys from the tree service call us by our first names. I've also made a boo-boo or two with tree species. What I thought was a very small dwarf ornamental cherry ended up being an entirely different species. Instead of looking at my planting tags, I went by memory. Not a good thing to do. It went very close to the house and we've finally mastered the skill of coppicing and it needs to be surgicated at least every other year to keep it in bounds. And since my DH wears a leg brace now, and ladder work isn't his strong point, guess who shinnies up the ladder to limb up the young ones? It makes me respect my ex-fil all the more. Back on the family farm in Missouri, we heated with wood. The summers were always spent felling and chopping wood a year ahead of time so it could season. Dad had a car engine rigged up on what looked like a wheelbarrow frame with a huge circular saw mounted to it. He somehow knew how to bring the big ones down without being under it when she fell. That took nerve. We used mauls to split it with sledges and axes to trim. Dangerous work....See MoreI hate deer I hate deer I hate deer
Comments (27)When I was a teenager, my mother thought chipmunks were cute. My Aunt next door cut down on the amount of cats & Mom was feeding them (the tree rats). The next thing we knew, there were chipmunks EVERYWHERE. Dozens of them, digging up all the bulbs & everything we planted. Emptying all the bird feeders. Running & playing & most of all multiplying. My Uncles were poisoning, trapping & shooting them until they finally got down to a manageable number. In later years, I had a Sheltie who thought it was her job to be on chipmunk patrol & she took it very seriously & kept them away. My Newf isn't that excited over such a small mouthfull but we have an Eskie who likes organic dog toys (mice & such are organic cat toys). Linda...See MoreI hate black walnut trees
Comments (12)Why do you need a walnut tree for baking, just go to a good store and buy them! I feel the same as Connie M. I'm so sick of my neighbor's walnut tree. I'm surprised no one mentioned the fact that they attract rats 🐀!!! They either live in the trees or envade your yard to eat the fallen nuts. When it rains, the tree leaves secret oils that heavily stain concrete and leaves a black soot on surrounding plants. In addition, A LOT of people are seriously allergic to nuts (including me). When they are not dropping THOUSANDS of leaves or nuts, they drop these wormy-looking things all over the yard. When the leaves come out for spring, allergies 🤧 are ridiculous. They are aggressive in height and grow branches that touch the ground; basically takes over the yard...and everyone's yard it's next too. Expensive to have it trimmed ($300 for just my side) neighbor only trims the part that touces his patio and leaves the rest for his other three neighbors to deal with. I had to pay $220 to have my concrete powerwashed! And yes, i have asked the neighbors 5 times to trim the tree but no resolve. The tree is a nuisance! It provides shade, but I'd rather install a Pergola than to deal with the overload of cons!!!...See MoreHate my microwave! Looking for recs for a new one...
Comments (6)Does your GE Profile have the capability to change the "signal" tones? My Sharp Microwave Drawer was driving me nuts because it has the capability (that was activated) to continue notifying me for quite a while -- seemed like 5 minutes, probably 2 to 3 intermitently, then once every 30 seconds to a minute for a while. I actually turned it off so now I get an END notification, but can understand how with a multi-step recipe it is frustrating not to be notified & be able to react immediately. It is nice to have the flexibility -- maybe you have it & don't know it. The Sharp also has the +1 minute button with the Start button, but this particular microwave is the drawer & I don't know how the features compare to their countertop or shelf models. Good luck!...See Morearktrees
