Oh, gee, I thought you really meant real weeds. Because, believe it or not, I do have a favorite weed. I actually have a few, which I let grow in my yard as long as they don't overtake my gardens.

My favorite, which I always let grow, is Venus' Looking Glass. I love the foliage on this weed, and the flowers are pretty too. So far it has not been overly aggressive in my garden, so I let it do it's thing and enjoy it.

Another favorite is one that I don't know the name of. It grows a single stem, very thin and about 18 inches tall, and has a teeny tiny light purple flower on the tip. Reminds me of something you'd see on a prairie (which really means nothing from someone who grew up in a city in New England and never even saw the prairie, lol). I've been trying to identify it this year because I just found out a friend of mine also lets this weed grow in her yard because she likes it.

And I also love Eggs and Butter. That's the only name I know it by. I don't have this in my yard, but I love when I see it on the side of the road. I think it's some kind of snapdragon-related plant. Very pretty.

My favorite is the blue chicory. I have some that come back and bloom around the mailbox every year.I coordinate the color of my annuals I plant there with the chicory. Plus, it's all up and down my county road on both sides, and if the county mower wouldn't go by and mow it down several times there would be blue as far as the eye could see. There's even Queen Anne's Lace intermixed with some of it. I mow my side of the road and try to save as much as possible until it gets ragged looking or the county says "that's enough". ha

When I first moved into my place, the orchard had been left go, hadn't been mowed in a long time. It was like looking at a sea of blue, and I still have nice stands of it scattered about.

Clover. I love watching the bees all over the flowers :)

Isn't anyone going to mention dandelion? Heard it makes great wine!! I remember growing up as a kid I often would see the old Italian woman from next door walking home with a basket of dandelions (balanced on her head, no less LOL!!), no doubt to make the vino with....

mxk3; that's just creepy. Those are my favorites as well. It thrills me to see the bumblebees all over the clover. I love it in the lawn. I love violets in the lawn too. DH isn't a happy camper with either of them being present in his precious lawn. I love QAL; I see it everywhere in my area. Alot of it grown up thru cracks in sidewalks & pavement, especially along the highways. And dandelions? Well, I'm not particularly thrilled with them, but I consider it a necessity for my bunnies, who are content with just eating my lawn, but they really do love those dandelions. Its funny to see them snip the bottom of the stem then devour it. Another weed I love is commelina, but plant it in the sun and boy does it take over! Oenothera biennis is another undesirable for the most part, but, it's soooo easy to remove unwanted shoots and the goldfinches sure do love them.
Schoolhouse; I believe the blue chicory a favorite of mine as well. I always see this one area filled with these blue weeds, that I think are gorgeous. I get so angry when the town comes by to mow the weeds, but they really do grow back rather quickly. I tried to dig one up years ago, but didn't have any luck. Now that I have a name I'll have to try to find some seed...

Just goes to show where my mind is at - I LOVE Queen Anne's Lace, but never even thought of it as a weed, lol.

I'm wondering if that blue chicory you speak of is the same as the blue flower along the roadsides that my mom always called blue cornflower. If so, it is indeed beautiful. Funny though, I never noticed it until about three years ago when my mom pointed it out as we were driving and said how she "always" loved it. Once she pointed it out, I wondered how I ever missed it, lol, because it's everywhere! My mom said she had dug some up once and had it in her garden, and I still didn't remember it. Oh well. I know it now and I love it!

Wait a minute - what's creepy? The woman with the basket of dandelions?

Um....what did you think....people all through the ages just ran to the grocery for food and a bottle of wine? LOL! She was just doing what she did back home and was perfectly normal to her - collecting a plant to make wine with. Nothing at all "creepy" about that! Why is it any different than picking wild blueberries to eat or something of that sort?

Hey, I wouldn't do it, but that's only because I'm not particularly fond of wine. (unless I can't sleep - like now - then nothing works better than a glass of red wine to knock me right out....)

mxk3, I think Tracy meant it was creepy that you and she had the same favorites - I think "creepy" in a weird, twilight-zone kinda way, lol. I don't think she was making a comment on the woman or her dandelions, lol!

Oh - I'm sorry!! I misunderstood the post.

Well, hey, if anyone else thinks Dandelion Woman was creepy, I'll still defend her! (and anyone else who wants to make wine out of weeds) LOL!

But, yea, that is kind of twightlight-zoney that we like the same weeds!

I think that some of the sunflowers I grow here in the high desert would have been considered a serious weed in the wheat fields of Kansas a half century ago.

I have a climbing milkweed that smells nice when it blooms. The monarchs lay eggs on it and I like to watch the babies. Brown-eyed susans are pretty on the side of the road now, earlier the wild monarda were pretty. Terry, not a weed for sure, but what does it take for success with your yellow sumac in your photo?
