Why are there no pics on AV sites?

I've been browsing AV sites lately looking for my little blue wasp. I found one with a fairly good catalogue of pics, and Rob's has pics, but most of the sites I've found have no, or very few, pics. Even on e-bay, there sometimes are just descriptions, or a pic of the plant not in bloom. When I search Google-images, I can't find anything on most varieties.

What gives?

Probably the cost to store all of the pictures is too much. I have First Class 2 program through AVSA, it has some pictures and is helpful.

Have you been to the AVSA pictures section recently? I wandered over there and found pictures of these wasps:

Drucilla
Fay's Paisley
Calico Wasp
Wedgewood Wasp

without much trouble. I didn't look for all of them, and every wasp picture on the site isn't in FC2 Here's a list of all of the wasps I counted on FC2:

A. - My cats do not eat my plants - and I have too many plants (and 2 cats) - so some reduction wouldn't hurt. We have a Show in 2 weeks - I am dreaming on selling everything that blooms and leaving myself only starters and leaves and most of the trailers - because it takes long time to get them to the size. The cat damage is mechanichal - fly in the window - all bets are out - everything is flying. Or they decide to walk through the lower light shelf. Regarding names and unnamed - and to show or not to show - you probably have green fingers, you can grow plants so they are looking great and blooming great - at some point you will want to try more elaborate varieties, something different - so going to the Shows, seeing what other people grow and may be bringing a starter or 2 is part of developing your hobby. Association with people with the same interests is enjoyable and useful - so joining the club can be attractive at some point. And how did it start - you got a NOID violet or 2 - and they did great for you. Regarding the lamp - you can get a skinny fluorescent fixture to fit your growing place - and you can hang it from the ceiling above your violets - and turn it on in the evenings. Depends how handy you are - you can figure out some inconspicuous support for T8 or T5 fixture - like they sell for above the kitchen counters - light stick or some similar name. Good Luck Irina

Velleta, What you have described is Liquified Petroleum Gas (sometimes abbreviated LPG) used for the stoves, also known as propane or butane. That's what we had at home before we got natural gas (the underground pipe kind). However, I don't think it's the issue either. It wouldn't choose one plant. I only meant to say that the phrasing of that bit of advice wasn't really accurate and yet I'd found it multiple places. Added: Since sometimes other readers find these threads, I looked up "cooking gas" and it does seem to refer to LPG or the "bottled" gas instead of the natural gas. I think natural gas might do the same thing, but I don't want to sit a plant beside my unlit stove to see. I've had a couple of blossoms brown when they were near the cook top, but I only sit plants there waiting to repot them and I tend to neglect them for a day or two so I don't know if it's the gas or the neglect. It's on an island so they sit right beside the stove. I'm happy it's nothing incurable too. My understanding of the botrytis blossom blight is that it then progresses. There are a lot of photos of it on other plants and it looks like something I've seen on outdoor plants. It's not exactly slimy but mostly looks either decayed or moldy on those ones. Hey Barb-- At least the perlite doesnt hurt anything. You should of seen it earlier , what a mess. Im not only into hummers , but the plants it takes that they like. I usually grow from seed , I do buy some , but anyway thats what takes up so much of my time during this time of year. That is also why I dont have many AVs.

I've found that unless I buy specialized AV fertilizer, my plants don't bloom. The way to know is to try it---if you get blooms with what you're using, stick with it. If they don't bloom, switch to the special AV fertilizer (it's not expensive and you can pick it up at most grocery stores/home supply stores). I find that diluting 1/4 tsp of fertilizer per gallon of water, and watering with that solution everytime works the best for me. Not being able to wash your violets is one of the biggest myths out there---just be sure to use water that is warm to the touch, or you will get pale marks all over the leaves. Another technique to clean them is the "dunk" method. Put plastic wrap over the pot to cover the soil, turn upside down and dunk the top of the plant in warm water. I like this method a lot, but it is best to do it when the plant is out of bloom (it seems to shorten the life of the flowers). Otherwise just running warm water from the faucet over the leaves works well too. As your fowers die off, pull the flower stalks off from the base where they come out of the plant. Good luck!
