My fav pair for not working in wet are the lambskin with palm reforcements of suede. So soft and tough, think I paid 15 or 20 for them have had them for 3 years and still good. Don't know the brand got them at tractor supply.
I use them when cutting/stacking wood also.
For when it's wet I just grab a cheapo pair of fishing gloves in the sporting goods section at WallyWorld, they are 1 or 2 dollars. They last a year, maybe 2.

Nothing fancy here. I use gloves sold to those hunk 'o men who remove garbage, do landscaping, deliver cased goods, do power line work, etc. The gloves are actually soft. They are knitted, but the palm and inside and tip of the fingers is melded with rubber so it makes that area waterproof and then the top of the hand being uncovered will make it so that your hand won't sweat. My gloves are gray with a bright orange neon rubber. :O) Easy to find in the gardens!! And oh! so warm on a cold gardening day!

A pair of $6 pigskin gloves from Big Lots 3 years ago. They have a hole in one finger, are well broken in which I like, and great when pruning roses, pruning trees and bushes, bundling, stacking wood, pulling tough stuff. Usually I don't wear any as I like to "feel" what I'm doing.

For some strange reason, I now prefer my old things better than new and use them until they're worn out. I keep latex gloves on hand for picking up icky stuff and working with sprays.

First said, I really don't like wearing gloves but I absolutely can't get my hands clean aftwards if I'm doing anything in the dirt. The only gloves that seem to hold up well but allow a feel, if you will, for what I am touching are the nitrile gloves from Gardeners supply. Thin nylon with fingers and palm coated with (whatever is) nitrile - I have 3 pairs that I leave everywhere but find because of the colors! priced ok at $6.00 a pair

I also like the nitrile gloves and they are my most used gloves for planting, deadheading and general flower bed maintenance. For other light work I like a soft thin leather glove. Also keep a pair of thicker leather gloves for raking, sawing, etc.

I use disposable gloves that doctors use in their office. :-P
They rip very easily, but I like the feel of soil in my hands. The gloves keep the initial squeamish feeling out. That's all. :-D If it's really cold, I pull on a larger pair over my insulated gloves.

For handling tough, sharp objects, I use sheepskin gloves I got from Menards. They are nice and soft.

I actually can't find gloves that fit my hands. They are usually too big for me.

I also prefer the nitrile gloves. I like the 1's that are fabric on the back of the hand so my skin can breath. I picked up 12 pairs(6 different colors) of Atlas nitrile gloves on Ebay pretty cheap this fall. So I should be set for year's to come.

I was just out at Home Depot waiting for them to get freed up to go see if they could shake some potting soil loose for me; the kind I went after was outside.

While waiting, I spotted a pack of 5 pairs of gloves coated with nitrile for $5. Can't beat that so bought those, mens' large, I like large, long fingers but smallish hands otherwise.

Also, while I was waiting for them to check for the kind I wanted (took an empty bag), they had MG potting soil sitting on a low display. It was 1-1/4 something and $8.95 or maybe $7.95, can't remember. Tested the weight and could lift it with ease.

I thought I should just make it easy on them (and myself) and buy the MG but didn't want to pay that and my last had more twiggy stuff in it.

So they roll out 4 bags of what I wanted for me, went to check out, and it was $3.77 a bag! Those things are so heavy even they had trouble lifting them, frozen solid.

So I'm waiting for help to get them out of the trunk of my car, won't try to do it myself in the snow. Son said he was going to go for me so I told him I saved him the trouble and did that part myself. Now he will come by, hopefully when he needs to head this way for something else, and unload it for me.

So funny to run across this post, because I was just at Big Lots and remembered to look for garden gloves. But in the "guy" section (tools, etc.) they had some called BOSS FLEXI grip / String Knit. They're poly/cotton but the palms and half of the top half of the fingers are dipped in rubber and they have a nice snug wrist. Picture having gloves on and a 1/2" of wax in a pan and you lay your hands flat in it and the wax flows up over the top a little. That's about how much is covered in rubber.

I forgot what color Large was but my Mediums' are off-white cotton and burgundy-ish rubber.

Don't know how well they'll work but they don't have seams in the fingers. I got so tired of my fingernails coming thru the tips. I also don't wear gloves much cuz I like to feel the dirt, but when I'm in wet mud and need to dig with my fingers I do wear them and got tired of the cloth ones getting soaking wet and muddy.

I grabbed 2 pr. for $2 each. I'll probably love them and when I go back they won't have 'em. Might just go grab a couple more.

Carol - No, but that stuff always brushes against my arms while picking wild blackberries. It hurts like crap! I always have cuts on my hands from wearing no gloves, but it's a guy thing - you wouldn't understand. hehe

This winter I started using a pair of the $1 knit gloves from Target under a pair of large rubber gloves over them. Makes wet jobs better and hands stay reasonably warm. Not so great with handling small things though.

Never have come across stinging nettle Maybe a different region thing? I do try and lok before I pull..but somehow I Mange to get Poison Ivy... . Lots of Poison Ivy lol.. I think I had it all summer in 2007 My 1st year with my own house and garden..

Gloves? Gloves? We don't need no stinkin' gloves...

BUT - I do admit to using them to deal with thorny things. Then, the thicker the better.
