Battery Question

I live in the Northeast. I own a 2005 Husqvarna which has about 110 hrs on it. The tractor is stored in the garage during the winter. Do I need to remove the battery during the winter months and place it on a trickle charger or just keep it in the tractor?

Whatever method you use, you want to keep the battery charged up, especially if it will be stored below freezing temps.
My method might vary, depending on what type of charging system the tractor has.
IF it's a 10A or higher system, I'd probably just drive the tractor for 10-15 minutes every week or 2. Move the oil around in the engine & trans, so to speak.
IF the nominal 3A system (like found on tractors without an electric PTO), I'd probably just store the battery in the garage and use the trickle charger overnight every couple weeks. A 3A system would use too much gas for the amount of charge produced.

The battery should be ok if you follow Bill's suggestion - exactly as stated. Unfortunatley, many owners put a trickle charger on the batter and forget it until next year. If this occurs, the battery will be cooked.

Another choice is to buy a battery maintainer (about $35 - $40). THe battery maintainer turns on and off as needed.

Remove the Battery and Take it to Autozone or auto parts store that will test it and have it tested (usually free service at most places), If it will charge they will find that out. if not then they will also know that. either way you will know the results after testing.

Known as lazy battery effect or battery memory, is an effect observed in nickel cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable batteries that causes them to hold less charge. It describes one very specific situation in which certain NiCd batteries gradually lose their maximum energy capacity if they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. The battery appears to "remember" the smaller capacity. This memory effect is caused by buildup of crystalline formations on the cell plates which increase resistence and lower the voltage of the affected cells. 1. Test the NICAD batteries using the battery tester to determine whether the NICAD batteries are fully discharged. 2. Locate the negative and positive nodes on the NICAD rechargeable battery. The negative node is on the flat end and the positive node is on the raised, bumpy end of the battery. 3. Put on all recommended safety gear. 4. Attach and hold the black clamp from the 12-volt battery charger to the negative end of the NICAD battery. 5. Rap the positive end of the battery with the red clamp from the 12-volt battery charger. This may cause the battery to emit sparks. It is part of the process of resetting the NICAD battery's memory. 6.Hold both the black and the red clamps on the appropriate negative and positive ends, respectively, of the NICAD battery for 1 to 3 seconds maximum. Release both clamps. 7.Retest the NICAD battery with the battery tester to determine whether the NICAD battery's memory has been fully reset. 8. I've heard about the restorer crap. yes garbage. it's a scam. it does work to a point but the battery has to be in pretty fair shape to begin with. As for drilling out the bottom of the battery and refilling it. the only nice way i can put it is " are you nuts ?" when there are pounds of crap at the bottom of the battery that is your insulating material seperating the cells. If the battery ever comes back to life the specific gravity of the electolite will be so high you will have pure acid. if and when the cells short out you have the makings of a pretty good little hydrogen bomb. Bottom line. the new acid will eat what is left of the battery's insides. don't do it.

Mine fit in anything. I use Energizer rechargeables in my digital camera. I also use them in flashlights, radios, etc. I LOVE them. I have 3 sets of 4 batteries. My batteries say 2500 - I think the higher the number - the longer the charge stays, but I am not sure on that. I use 4 at a time in my digital camera and I take LOTS of pictures. They can last for a couple weeks and hundreds of pictures/videos in my camera. I always keep one set charged. I use a "slow charger". It takes 8 hours to charge the batteries, but you can get fast chargers also. I recommend the Energizer Rechargeables to everyone. I think 4 batteries and the charger cost around $15. It has paid for itself many times over. I I also have a set of AAA's. My charger has a flip down in it that allows me to charge this size also. I use those in my MP3 player.

My additional $.02 is use a "24 hour timer" (set it to be ON for about 1 hour out of 24) to control a 3 AMP battery charger. The last timer I bought cost $5.50. And disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Doing this will eliminate ANY amount of parasitic drain that may be present in your vehicle electrical system.

Thanks for all of your opinions,,I like the thought of the battery maintainer. I might have to put that on my Christmas list.

Living in N.NJ - I store the battery of one of my mowers in the basement - and trickle charge it when doing the laundry - once or twice a month.

I was told a warmer basement - where I avoid freezing temperatures is kinder to the battery.

The other tractor gets used during the winter months (and it will get the older battery of the two ) it gets used frequently during the week and trickle charged in the garage as needed. Which reminds me to check the water levels in both of them ...

Gee njdpo - you only do laundry once or twice a month? I'm afraid I'd have to get a replacement wife with that deal...or hire some in-house laundry help. :-) jest kiddin.

I don't have that problem cause I run both of mine all winter doing mulching or other things. I did buy a trickle charger and a battery maintainer, but don't really feel comfortable hooking them things up with all the fuel in the shed plus other things.
