Why buying roses is dangerous

Today we were all out and about and were driving by a good local nursery that has a big selection of modern roses. I wanted to stop there and pick up some salvias (honestly!) and it turned out they were having a Father's Day Sale on all roses. Well 30% off was tempting, and I spent a delightful hour looking at their roses and contemplating a purchase that would save me all of $12. My husband laughed and said I must have a sixth sense for good deals on roses. Well, my sixth sense didn't tell me that while we were looking at beautiful flowers, our house was being burgled. That was some Father's Day gift we got when we came home and found all my jewelry gone. All of it, including my wedding band which no longer fit comfortably and was waiting to be stretched. I wisely kept it all in the bathroom, so perhaps it is mostly my fault.

The good part is the camera is still with us, so I can post pictures of my new acquisition:-).

The bottom line: Don't keep your jewelry where it can be easily found...

Oh, BUMMER! :o( That is a crying shame....my mom was just burgaled herself, not too long ago. I am very sorry. It was NOT your fault you were robbed.

I have been burgled, and the sense of having been invaded is worse by far than the financial loss.
I am so sorry.

My two cents: Please consider giving them another chance. I did get a mislabeled rose from them once, but have continued to order from them without any further problems. Of course, I did get a healthy rose even though it wasn't the one I ordered. If they were dying, that might be another problem. However, I tend not to plant anything into the ground unless the roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot--or close to it. That might be something you may want to consider in the future. I think it's important to have patience and forgiveness with a company that's good overall. (You may never have another problem with them again.) Also, as others have pointed out, the number of places that sell old roses (and willing to do mail order) is shrinking. And let's face it: you can't find these roses at Walmart.

I think all of us rustlers have rescued a Dr. Huey or two. My best one was just down the road from me last year. There was a house doomed to become a strip center, with a tall rose growing at one of its front corners. It was mid-spring, too early to take cuttings, so I watched the rose weekly ... to get the cuttings as soon I thought they'd be viable. During one of my visits, I was interrupted by the foreman and the engineer for the project. When I told them what I was doing, they told me to take whatever I wanted, to hurry up and not hurt myself, and not to come back. I cut that rose to the ground, and tossed the whole thing into my truck, processed it into cuttings, and put them in the greenhouse. Since the wood was WAY too green, most of the cuttings quickly perished. Two of them rooted, however, and I anxiously awaited their first flowers .... wine-red with bright yellow stamens. Rats! maryann, I get a huge ache inside when I see the destruction of plants and structures that comes with modern suburban development. It breaks my heart. What did the rambler you found look like? Around here, Dorothy Perkins is on the roadsides and up in the trees. That's where mine came from. I also know of a red rambler, that's not endangered yet, that I plan to rustle soon. I have a feeling that it's Excelsa (or something like that) since it blooms late just like DP does. I'm glad all of you have used this method of rooting and that it's worked well. It was taught to me by a rose friend, and I am thankful to her every day. Without this, my nursery would still be an unattainable dream, and I would be without most of the garden friends that I have met over the past few years. Besides, there's just something mysterious and magical about being able to take a piece of a rose and make a whole new rose out of it. Connie

I have just come in from wading the bog, a strange sensation and what a horrible site that would have been for anyone, me in shorts. Anyway there feels to be at least 6" of water under the crust, I have just got as much peat again so by the time that goes in I think it will firm up a fair bit. I covered the surface with a piece of liner so that should stop anything getting into the bog in the mean time. I dont want to add the new peat at the moment as I suspect I will be emptying the bog to fiddle with the liner. It doesnt feel right in some places.

I'm not going to get into a staple vs tack discussion here because I expect it's beyond the scope of what most people even care about and it probably doesn't matter to most people as long as the result looks good. But I'm not ashamed to say I'm old school about upholstery and greatly admire beautifully done work, especially the way it's done in Europe. Where I live people are quite demanding and an unusual number of craftsmen still do it the old way. If that makes too many holes in the frame then the next owner can deal with that. If tacking is slower and more expensive, that's ok too. I'll look for bargains on other stuff. I've just furnished an entire new house with old furniture and nothing I bought is wiggly or much more than folks are paying for case goods from NC in some instances. Some pieces are very old and I made sure they were sturdy before I bought them. But depending on how they were made in the first place, and what their life was like, that can vary alot. So, I sit, open drawers, move around on sofas, test arms, turn things over etc. I really examine before I buy, ask a lot of questions, discount half the answers and walk away from problems. I have 5 chairs that are super charming but wiggly and worrisome and they're not fun and not comfortable. I try not to make the same mistakes twice. Danger signs: Wiggling Split wood Loose arms, legs, backs Loose drawers Badly done patches Sagging Wood that looks wormy Also, elaborate stories about the "history" of a piece or how rare it is. My oldest and best piece was just reupholstered but it needed no gluing or bracing at all. It it looks great and is extraordinarily comfortable. My sofa came out of an auction and I bought it cheaply. Unfortunately the old velvet had been stripped off and it was reupholstered in muslin. It wasn't nearly as old as the chair but needed extensive rebuilding inside -- it was clearly sagging underneath. The upholstery plus the fabric cost me more than I paid for it in the first place. So was it cheap or was it expensive? To me, the personality of the piece mades it worth an investment though I doubt I'd get my money out of it if I went to sell it. It's the focal point of my living room and it's a piece everyone comments on. I love that sofa. I would always tell someone to never go out of your comfort zone when you buy something old -- don't pay too much. I agree -- you will probably need to do something to it. Not everyone is willing to buy old things and some people give them away. Many want new and then they definitely get staples. I'm glad to hear someone thinks they're better.

We were burgled some years ago, also on a Sunday, while we were at church. I think we almost intercepted them. I lost some antique jewelry that cannot be replaced. Since then I have found a pretty good hidey-hole in the house. Jeri, I used to carry my jewelry too, but I've grown too worried about leaving my purse (along with my mind) somewhere and have stopped carrying it all...just a few pieces at a time. If you put it in the safe deposit box, you never get to wear it, and my ambition is to wear my things until they are battered and scarred rather than leave it all pristine for my daughters. (laughing)

You should put up some wireless cameras to watch the doors. Our neighbor has two at his house next door. If nothing else he has brought over dvd's of what the camera sees when someone is acting funny. They are looking back and forth down the street as they come up your sidewalk and then they turn and heads for the hills when they look up and see that camera seeing their every move. The guys he caught in the act came up on his porch and one was watching for any neighbors that might see what they were doing while the second looked for a way to force the door, he looked up and there was the camera out of reach watching him. They turned and pretended to have gone to the wrong house and left as quick as they could. If nothing else you have new roses.

It makes you feel violated, mad, and unsafe all at the same time, doesn't it? Several years ago our home was robbed while we were at work. Most homeowners insurance policies have limits as to what they will pay for jewelry without rider attachments detailing expensive things. We found the three most valuable items in a pawn shop the next day, but we couldn't replace keepsake jewelry, not worth much to anyone else: senior rings, custom-made jewelry, a few things that belonged to my deceased parents. We now have a burlar alarm system, plus we have a protected safe for guns and jewelry when we are gone. It's a long story, but it shook our faith in the local police department since they handled the whole thing so poorly after we found the pawned items.

I'm so sorry; there's nothing worse than having strangers in your home rummaging through your things. It's the feeling of being violated in your sanctuary.

This spring, a couple of guys were going knocking on doors pretending they were doing carpeting cleaning. If no one was home, they were breaking in and stealing jewelry, electronics, etc. They hit a couple of my neighbors, and even walked in on an 11-year old girl who was home sick. Just be glad you weren't at home; things can be replaced but your safety is the most important. You just don't know what people can be capable of.

Masha, I am truly sorry that this happened to you, it is really sad, upsetting and sooo... unfair (I feel taking a wedding band is particularly mean)!

Please, don't make it even harder on you and blame yourself for the loss of your jewelery, because you kept them in the bathroom! We all know that we "should do things more properly" (for example putting jewelery in a safe or hiding them in a more difficult to find place), but it requires so much discipline in the daily life. Who can always come up with that?! Nobody has the right to break into your house and steal things from you in the first place!!!

I am glad, that you still have the camera and I am looking forward to seeing your newly, bought roses! Hopefully enjoying your beauties and taking photos of them distracts you a little bit from the bitter aftertaste that a burglary is leaving behind...

Thanks for sharing your story and reminding all of us that burglary can happen any time to anyone and that we should trying to be as prepared as possible.

Money comes and goes, this is something we have learnt since 1789, the bloody tragedy of the french revolution.
A lesson renewed in 1915, the violent annexion to italy, when soldiers shot into the house, here and there, for fun, firing at the mirrors, the lamps, the windows, the animals... and the people when they found some.
Then again in 1991, when the house was looted, and thieves even hit the walls hoping to find god knows what.
All gone: forniture, decorations, paintings, ceramics, jewelry, books, tapestries. Only time I saw my aunt crying. Not only for the monetary but also for the memories attached to these items, passed from generation to generation...
Well, from these things one gets smart. No more silver items, not even for the basics like everyday flatware. No emotional attachment to items, just simple 'jewelry' that can be easily bought again, and simple forniture.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and nice comments. Scardan, I feel humbled, my loss is nothing compared to yours. It is comforting, in a sense, to know it has happened to other people too. I find that what I miss is memories, not the dollar value which will mostly be reimbursed by insurance. I went to the flea market on Sunday, and the pawn shop today, but nothing came up. I feel I should let things be and move on. After all, my family is unharmed, my house is intact, and the garden is blooming:-).

Hi, Masha. I am very sorry to hear about this awful robbery.. I'm way belated to send you my condolences...there are so many wonderful memories with a wedding band. Nothing can replace this. No matter what anyone tries to say to comfort, there is always sadness that keeps haunting us when we lose our precious keepsakes. When I thought I had lost my engagement ring, it was one of the worst feelings ever, so I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through to have yours stolen. But thank goodness, mine was found and am very much hoping that yours will somehow make its way back to you--that the burglars are caught, etc. etc. But we are all thinking of you and am at least relieved that you and your husband are safe and sound... Many hugs!

We had a chimney fire at our house a few years ago, and thanks to the excellent fire department (and the fact that there was a station 3 blocks away) only one room and part of the roof were burned on our 100 year old Victorian, which is wood frame with what they call "balloon framing" - kind of like a fire already laid in the fireplace, but not lit yet. After all of the repairs were done, we had a fire alarm system installed with a security company, and along with it came a burglary alarm system. I was astonished at the credit our homeowners insurance gave us - it pays for about 75% of the cost of the alarm system each year! Just wanted to share this info with everyone...
