You don't need to prune climbers in trees.
Plant them where they will get plenty of sun the first few years (like a few feet from the south side of the tree), and train them onto the tree as they develop climbing canes.

New Dawn doesn't bloom that well in So Cal--mine sure didn't. It likes a winter chill from what I can tell.

Clothilde Soupert needs to be in the exact right climate or else the flowers either don't open or brown up before opening.

Madame Alfred Carriere would work, and rebloom. It will find itself some sun quick enough.

I do not recommend CLOTILDE SOUPERT for California rosarians. The flowers are prone to balling and need heat (like 90+ degrees Fahrenheit) to open up properly. The foliage, while black spot resistant, is very susceptible to powdery mildew. I can't imagine what this rose would look like in a Mediterranean climate. Probably something out of a rosarian's nightmare. Now don't get me wrong, I love Clotilde but she is a Southern Belle through and through. She is lovely in areas where the summers are hot/humid, but take her outside of her comfort zone and what you'll get is a mummified mess.

I agree that Clothilde Soupert is not a good choice for CA. It has bad powdery mildew in the spring, and balls throughout the summer (interior blossoms open fine - my assessment is that the outer guard petals dry and trap the inner petals from opening).

We have banksiae growing up trees in the Sacramento cemetery. Only bloom once, although I believe that Jeri gets some repeat bloom. The species are thornless, but they climb just fine. Our webmaster just developed a new page for our website - take a look.

I love Madame Alfred Carriere, I have two babies of her thanks to recommendations on this forum and seeing some mature ones in person... and many people here told me that it would probably withstand the shade for a bit until it could reach the sun. Some people had her growing in full shade at the bottom of the plant. It's really a charming rose, imho, as long as you don't mind it getting large.

I love Cecile Brunner cl, and the Lady Banks roses. They don't usually repeat, but they're SO CHARMING, who cares. They're really vigorous, I bet they'd easily climb up a tree.

I bet you could go with a hybrid musk or maybe a noisette, too.

The Fairy is one of those terribly prickly roses. But there are a whole bunch of Polyanthas I love.

Look at the bush form of 'Cecile Brunner.' Or, somewhat taller, 'Spray Cecile Brunner.'
I love, love, love 'Perle d'Or.'
Check out 'Baptiste la Faye' and 'Petite Francoise' (both from Euro-Desert).

All of the Koster Polyanthas seem to be good in SoCalif.

I love 'Lady Reading' and also 'Orleans Rose.'

If you like poiple, you need that 'Baptiste la Faye,' but also look at 'International Herald Tribune.' It's classed as a Floribunda, but I think of it more as a Poly.

Want something small and delicious. Check out 'Sunshine.' Quite rare, but exquisite, and very fragrant ... get it budded from Burlington Rose Nursery, you won't regret it.

Molineux, how cool that I picked a good rose for my hot, humid garden. Everything you just said was completely new to me. Of course, I give full credit to the nursery where I saw her growing in August - all green and lovely and BS-free. She doesn't even ball that much here, but a hard rain pretty much destroyed her last flush. I do love her. One of mine is starting to get a little big.

Renee, I don't grow many polyanthas, and apparently, even if I did, they would be the wrong ones for you. I do grow The Fairy in a pot. Amazingly prickly and amazingly BS free and amazingly slow to flush out. She takes forever in my garden. She's working on her 2nd flush now. It's July!!!

I like Koster polyanthas, they are pretty much constantly in bloom and I saw them growing well here in total abandon (they are rather popular gift rose here). There also are found sports of Dick Koster that go under the name Morsdag - those seem to be unkillable as well and I can't recall them being horribly thorny.

Aren't Marie Pavie and Marie Daly also polyanthas? They aren't supposed to be very thorny and they are also known to thrive all over. I sadly don't own a single poly and need to remedy that situation soon.

I'm going to do it- plant some climbers in the redwoods, and a polyantha in my new little garden area. But no Clothlide Soupert, I will have to content myself with your photos from the South.

Hiya Renee, roses in trees is something we do well in the UK but we generally go for the monster ramblers such as Wedding Day, Seagull, Paul's Himalayan Blush, Rambling Rector and the most famous (and biggest) R.Filipes Kiftsgate. There is a lovely sport of Kiftsgate in apricot called Treasure Trove too. All of these roses put out great swoony heads of blossom and later, bunches of heps. There is a good list in Tony Lord's 'Designing with Roses' but for different colours, here is a flavour.

Pink: Debutante, New Dawn, Jean Guichard, Frances E Lester
Copper, Apricot: Paul Transon, Leontine Gervais, Francois Juranville/

With respect to Mr. Beales, his recommendations may not be the best choices for Southern California.

Some of those roses may not bloom much at all, without winter chill.
Consider instead some of the HGiganteas (such as Belle of Portugal) or the banksias -- roses with a more tropical origin.
Guadalupe Volunteer, a rambler discovered at the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, will climb trees, and definitely blooms for us here at the coast.
Silver Moon, which is wonderful in Northern CA, climbs beautifully here, but does not bloom.

Verdun - my favorite polyantha du jour
Raymond Privat (also sold as Baby Faurax) - wonderful in part shade but only in a neutral soil. Too alkali or too acid, it's a creep. In Mill Valley, it's 6 feet wide.

I have seen Belle of Portugal growing through a big old oak tree near Placerville, in the foothills east of Sacramento, and it was WONDERFUL.

I've seen two really old ones like that.
It's one of those things -- once seen, never forgotten.

Speaking about polyanthas, I am now admiring Phyllis Bide through my window - it is one of those a bit weird roses, with rather weird coloration, but he blooms a lot and I like that he has that "something different" look. :)
