Your favorite red flowered phlox paniculata?

I "need" it to be a shorter variety with good disease resistance and sturdy stems.

(I have "Lord Clayton" but I am hoping for something shorter.)

I've been eying "Tequila Sunrise" for a bed I am developing. Nice short phlox (around 16"), blooms summer into late summer.

Not sure if "Tequila Sunrise" is red enough, but maybe it could work "color-wise" for you?

Thanks 'greg' for the suggestion. It looks a bit too orangey.

Has anyone had experience with Phlox "Red Flame"?

terrene, Good news that your Eupatorium has not produced seedlings. Maybe it is the mulch. I mulch a lot, so I will remember to do that thickly around it and see what happens. Usually I deadhead it. chelone...my first year with phlox too. I have steered away from it for fear of mildewed ugly plants. Every time I have seen them at the nursery, they are all a mess, even those that claim to be mildew resistant. The NLeigh I picked up at a supermarket..lol. I had to take it home, because it was the end of the summer, the foliage looked great and the price was right. :-) As for my wrists, I am hanging in there and trying not to overuse at this point but doing ok. I doubt I will ever be in a position to keep up with the Idylls again though, chelone. I discovered that was way too much typing for me. It doesn't help that I usually have too much to say either. [g] Thanks for asking. Hope you are enjoying your summer in my favorite state. :-) entling...I will see how mine does this year and report back. I will have to notice exactly how much sun it is getting. Thanks all! :-)

Thanks, Ruth. It is; 'Fascination' already cut back. Am finding the few named Veronicastrum cultivars I have may not bloom as long as, or as late as, the species Veronicastrum (still in bloom). Our Echinops are very low maintenance perennials. It's 'Coral Flame'. The other one we have, planted at the same time, is somewhat taller than that one. Greenweed: Think garden phlox do require some maintenance for maximum attractiveness, but find balloon flowers higher maintenance, at least the way I perennial garden. They're certainly very hardy here, but the major problem (for me) is that the spent blooms (look like pods) really detract from the overall look of a blooming plant. I therefore dead-head the spent flowers. For me, the dwarf balloon plants look particularly unattractive, after the initial bloom, without deadheading. Thanks Terrene. Agree with everything you say in praise of 'Nora Leigh'. Thanks Prairiemoon. The daylily is 'Chicago Apache'. I got that no name red phlox from a customer's garden. It looks quite similar to 'Starfire'. Like your colour descriptions. I intend to use as many perennials in mixed perennial beds as possible and let the colours fall where they may. I do deliberately add certain colours, as being less common among perennials (e.g. blue and orange). I'd also say that particular perennials sort of colour coordinate themselves (e.g. the garden phlox, blue (more or less) through red, plus white, or the Helenium (just beginning to bloom) yellow, orange and red). To this end, I try to group different cultivars of the same perennial in a mixed bed.

I'm hoping to find some new phlox varieties at one of our local nurseries this year. If not, I may wish I had ordered some. It would be nice if the local places would send out color catalogs in the middle of winter so I'd know ahead of time what they're going to carry. Roselee - If you're still hanging around - Have you noticed whether your John Fanick's phlox comes true from seed? Are they at least more heat and drought tolerant than others like their parent? If you ever have any unwanted seeds or seedlings from that one, I could give them a loving home. : ) Anyone adding new phlox this year? I bought a bag of bare-root Orange Perfection phlox at Walmart a few weeks ago and potted them up. I don't know if that one is butterfly approved though. We'll see.

David is quite resistant to powdery mildew so is a good choice. I had Norah Leigh which has variegated leaves with pinky-violet flowers that was resistant as well but she didn't overwinter for me this year; it was a brutal winter. Natasha and Laura are said to be less susceptible to mildew as well. If you google Mildew Resistant Phlox you will get a list of cultivars that are less mildew prone and advice for growing.

I like Red Riding Hood phlox. It has done well when others got mildew.

I had Red Flame 2 years ago. Bought a big potful. Taller than described. The plant looked beautiful, but did not come back after the winter. As if the whole thing disappeared WITHOUT A TRACE. All modesty aside, it only happened for me twice in my life, that a big clump of phlox did not come back. I'm totally clueless what happened to it.

I have 3 varieties of the Flame series: white, pink, and violet. But I have not tried the red one. They are all shorter, no more than 1.5 ft for a very mature one. They flower for a long time. They do re-seed so gave me more plants to move around.

I have coral flame which seems like it falls into the height range you are looking for, but I suspect you want a deeper red.
I don't know if all the flame series are the same height... I just bought light pink flame and it seems slightly taller in the pot. I hope I stays that way but the label does read 18 inches so I'll have to wait and see.
Lord Clayton is on my list. I might already have it as an unlabeled plant but maybe having another would confirm that :)

Rouge, the second was Kirchenfurst, but there was a possible explanaition(drowning). In the case of Red Flame there was no flooding.
