I broke my soil! Please help!

Hey all, thanks for reading my post. So I broke my soil and I have no idea how to fix it. Here's the story...

I've had a plot in a local community garden for two seasons now. Last season went remarkably well. Tomatoes, Zuch, beans, flowers, everything grew like gangbusters. Working off my initial success i decided to "improve" my soil by adding compost and tilling deep to get extra root space. Unfortunately, this completely backfired...

So I think I got a whole bunch of clay up from the native Colorado soil and now my garden is like a brick. When I drive a pitch fork in I get huge chunks of rock-hard stuff. Totally inhospitable to plant life. A couple of details that might aid you soil wizards: first, it smells. The soil has a boggy kind of smell that can't be good. Second, the clumps I'm getting have white/gray powdery stuff mixed in it.

Needless to say nothing grows in this stuff. Here's couple things I've tried:

* adding peat compost to improve drainage

* tilling and removing the chunks. More just seem to form!

* laboratory soil test - they said everything looked good!

Any ideas? I really want to have a killer garden next year but at this point it's not looking good.

Thanks very much, --scott
