PUZZLER: Hardy, constantly blooming, pink climber for zone 5b???
Comments (34)Rebecca, I've had Felix LeClerc for about 9 years and I echo the fantastic comments of everyone about him. He's among the first roses to bloom in late May here in zone 5, and he's totally cane hardy and pretty indestructible. It took about 4-5 years before he rebloomed very well, but now I get blooms pretty steadily into July, and scattered blooms off and on even into November. As for height, I think we'd be in the same boat being in close zones. Felix is hardy to zone 3 at least so I think you're still looking at cane hardiness. Mine is about 8' tall and he puts out laterals pretty well, so if you pull the main canes horizontally along your 8X4' trellis you should be able to get it fairly well covered after a while. Like all climbers, he takes a good 4 years to come into his own so be patient. Also, I find his canes to be pretty stiff so I wouldn't expect to do the zigzag canes you can do with more flexible climbers like Crown Princess Margaretha. You also want to make sure your trellis is pretty strong, given that those sturdy canes can pull down an average wood trellis in the wind. You didn't ask for pictures, but here's one of Felix trying (and not succeeding) to pull down a 6' fake iron (aluminum) fence. You can see that even 4' or so away from the fence he can easily reach the top. For years I didn't realize he was supposed to be a climber so I kept pruning him lower to keep him in line. Fortunately it made him bush out and he's forgiven me since. Mine was from HCR too and he's absolutely fine on his own roots. Have fun Cynthia...See MoreLets See photos of your favorite climbers!!!

Comments (18)I'll post some pics later, but I love climbers. Most of mine are new this year, so I can only comment on how they've done so fare. The only two I've had for longer are New Dawn and Viking Queen, both of which I adore. I got Awakening this year and at first was unsure if it was "worth it" considering I have 5+ NDs, but the petals are extremely long lasting. thick and gorgeous and can give a pretty button eye under the right circumstance. MAC is vigorous with hardly a thorn. I'm loving Cl. Pinkie who is getting reading to flush after being put in the ground in bright light, but currently total shade with no BS! Then there's Peggy Martin; no flowers yet, but vigorous growth, no BS. Bubble Bath, Felicia and Belinda are settling in and putting on growth and a couple of buds since planting in the same bed as Cl. Pinkie. If you want something to cover a large area, there's always Cl C. Brunner, but I like variety. : ) Of the potted Lg. Fl. Climbers, I adore Parade!!!!, C. Crimson Glory has one of the best fragrances of all my roses I think and blooms a lot, followed by Aloha. I've only had a few blooms from Setina and Cl. Caroline Testout which were beautiful. I know you already have and love Blossomtime. I seem to be collecting all ND's progeny!!! ) I almost forgot this year's favourite: Cl. Clotilde Soupert. I can not describe the beauty of this rose with its baby soft petals and enticingly sweet fragrance. It's a vigoroug climber and (surprinsingly) hasn't balled for me even when the buds developed in rain. I've planted her under the eaves just in case, with her roots in the open. She's one I intend to propagate and use to cover the front of my house. Florentina is vigorous and gorgeous, but little scent and may be a hard one to mix. I haven't seen a bloom yet on mine. For a once bloomer, I'm enamored with Bobbie James, Vielchenbleu and Chevy Chase. The latter is amazing! Purezza is also a gorgeous one; I think she repeats....See MoreClimbers that are not cane hardy for zones 6 & colder
Comments (30)Thanks vaporvac! JL like most climbers has a heavy flush of blooms in June, and sporadic thereafter. It can get pretty tall with beautiful pink flowers. I've had mine for at least 15 years. There's another climber that blooms for a long time in my garden and it's Super Excelsa. It starts blooming later in the season, but it continues blooming right up until frost. One thing to warn you though is that it's a thorny monster! LOL.
