Definitely looks like lacebark elm to me.

It still looks like a lacebark elm to me LOL but I just remember that cedar elm is popular in that region. I'm not familiar with those but cedar elm would be my second guess.

bumping my post

I was trying to find a website that I had seen a while back that helped in identifying the type of elm, based on the leaves, but I didn't find it right off. Might be a good place to look, if you haven't already. From what I did see in my search, it appears that the American Elm has leaves that stretch out to a point, unlike your elm's leaves. It doesn't appear that your elm is an American Elm.

What are the reasons why you don't think it's a chinese elm?

I don't know what kind it is, but it doesn't look like my American elm. I'll link to photos of that if it helps.

sennact, what a pretty tree. i can only hope mine ends up like yours. it's hard to say being that it's so small.

musicalperson, i don't think it's chinese because there is nothing weepy about it. it's certainly not lacebark because the bark doesn't have the lace pattern.

i referred to that identification website a while back and by looking at the leaves and their serration and asymmetry at the base of the leaves, i came to the conclusion that it was american elm, but maybe i'm wrong.

We've been planting those in our community. First of all, there's a number of cultivars of those. Some with vase shape, some with rounded weepy shape and some with wide spreading live-oakish/ yoshino cherry shape.
So shape does vary.

Second, the bark doesn't get showy for a while and that tree is still very young. This varies based on the cultivar of course but I do see the beginnings of the orange bark in the photos.

I still think it's chinese elm but the only other possibility I can think of is cedar elm which I am unfamiliar with. Have you ruled that out?

It is lacebark elm. Some lacebark elms have good peely bark and others do not. Nothing you can do, it is genetic.

how about a siberian elm?

after much research on leaves, fall color, shape, bark etc., i'm convinced it's a cedar elm. thank you musical person. i forgot to mention that the leaves turn a BRIGHT yellow in the fall.

i'm bumping my post. i thought that maybe the yellow leaves in the fall could help narrow it down. I'm positive it's not a lacebark. i think it may be a cedar elm. do cedar elms turn bright yellow in the fall?
