African Violets -New to this, need ideas on plants selections!
Comments (41)Aegis, Leaves vs. plugs. I don't have a strong success rate with leaves that arrive in the mail. I heard Annie say to order leaves, so I did try. Terri, I believe I have a similar crocheted piece. I like your Rex Begonia. Before I got into AVs in a large way, I grew Rex Begonias, or any begonias. Both of your comments and sharing are delightful. And D Barron's. Everything having to to with AVs seems complicated lately. It is complicated to order them across country. The AV mag has been showing various gesneriads. D Barron, if you have not tried to grow AVs for ten years, you might find that at the field had changed a lot. There is a great deal of diversity that many find fascinating. If you have a local garden club in your area, you might stop by for a visit and bring in one or more of your plants to show and talk about. The sharing might interest you and others....See MoreAre there any true "red" varieties of AV's?
Comments (30)Rosie, I don't know if your question marks were intended for me or not but just in case, I will explain. I got tired of "Thrip Wars". I have had them on and off for over a year and after recently finding a couple more on a few plants, I went to "DEFCON 4". I debudded/flowered everything in the house. On Wednesday I gave everything green in the house an "Avid" bath. After two more Wednesdays, I will resume normal operations. Hopefully I'll have some peace w/o them rascals eating up my plants. All went well and all of my plants seem none the worse for wear. They really, really want to grow some flowers though. Holy mackerel, I have not seem bloom stems like this in a long time!...See MoreWhat is wrong with my African Violet? (discolored leaves)
Comments (14)I'm glad to hear that this variety naturally points up some because I don't have a good spot to put it other than where it is now. I'm hoping it likes this spot because it is starting to flower. I noticed know that the plant feels a little wobbly in the soil... I feel like it shouldn't move so easily, makes me think maybe the roots aren't very deep. Maybe i should repot it....See MoreWHY DOES MY VIOLET HAVE HARD STIFF LEAVES ???
Comments (19)I put layers of paper towels on some of them. Not toilet paper. They are a lot thicker:) If I put somewhere it is toilet paper, that was a typo, it wouldn't do much. The units are very far from each other, opposite sides of a room and one is on my porch, a dark northern covered porch. Little room around them to put plants, thus the violet are under the lights, they only hold like 4-5 plants. Wish I could put some-kind of bigger 'board or something under the lights, to put a lot more plants under them, to grow around the edges, and move the violets around. Then I would have a lot more bloomers. Oh, I dont have a way to measure the light. I just know the AeroGrow garden seed pods won't grow under them,....that was months ago, they need VERY strong/new lights,so they are much weaker now....See Morenyxx
