What temperature to stop composting?

I have a compost bin that I monitor the temperature of on a regular basis. I was wondering at what temperature it is ok to remove the compost to start a new pile. If I understand correctly, composting occurs between 150F and 110F. Does this mean it is no longer hot at 110F. My pile is at 100F and I would like to use it and start a new pile.

May I ask what temperature you achieved, for how long and did the pile get mixed at all? I guess while I'm at it, are there any higher risk materials in there (seeds, diseased plants, food etc.) and what do you intend to "use" the compost for?

Heat isn't necessary and determining the 'doneness' of compost by heat alone is not usually done. There are several "phases" of composting, high heat (thermophilic) being just one.

Composting occurs at most any temperature above freezing, although much slower at colder temperatures. There are several stages of thermophilic bacteria that generate those higher temperatures, and maybe you would want your compost to hold at say 135 degrees for a few days for a valid reason but generally when the temperatures of your compost reach those hieghts it is time to turn the pile.
Turning does not mean stopping the composting activity, that will only happen when there is no more raw material to be digested.

My pile gets hot occasionally. But for the most part, I have a cold compost system. Does anyone ever have enough compost? ;-) My garden plot is probably smaller than most, its just 10 x 10. I intentionally keep it small because I don't have a lot time or sunshine (shady lot). It took a long time to get a good first batch (cold composting is slow), but now that I have a continuous operation, I get at least two or three wheelbarrows full, twice each year. I do have a screen that sets on top the wheelbarrow when I am shoveling out finished stuff, to help screen out unfinished stuff. My bin is 4' x 4' x 4'. I bought two 8' prefab fence panels from Menards and cut them in half and then hinged them together. I stapled chicken wire to the inside. The entire thing will fold flat, if I want to move it. The hinges allow me to open one or two sides. Here are a couple pics:

Thank you, everyone! My problem when I started composting was using too much green material and it looks like I still have the same problem. I did know that color isn't the real indicator - brown horse manure is a "green," but I thought dried material made up "browns." I live in the middle of a farm field - with no trees - so dried leaves are tough to come by. I shred newspaper, but I can't imagine shredding enough to constitute all of my browns. I'll have to keep looking. I'm not really stressed about getting perfect compost. The compost I have been getting has not been the "black gold" advertised by ComposTumbler, but it has been brown chunky stuff that tills into the soil pretty easily and makes good mulch when I use it as a top dressing. I'm just trying to learn - that's the fun of gardening!

If you have room for a loose pile, you should have room for a bin. Nothing complicated, just four metal stakes make a frame to wire in a square of hardware cloth (which isn't cloth, of course. Your pile will be neater looking, and more vertical. It will be well shaped for maximum speed. If you poke several holes in the bottom of a big garbage can, you could use that--then you'd have a top for it. On a more philosophical level, gardening and composting are, to me, all about balance and peace. Like a household, it requires flexibility, give and take, patience, and even compromise. Gardening compulsions that make loved ones unhappy and stressed kinda lose the point. Get Zen with it, and when you have to throw away a bunch of potato peelings, consider it placed in the compost pile of happy relationships. Over time, you'll have a gold of another kind.

Warmth Red Worms (Eisenia fetida) tolerate bed temperatures as high as 43C (109.4F). It is best to avoid letting your worm bed temperatures go above 30C (86F). Adults of this species have been known to survive being encased in frozen material, and the cocoons are well adapted to survive sub-zero temps for extended periods. The optimal temperature range for breeding Eisenia fetida (red wigglers) is 15-20C (59-68F), yet maximum growth (weight gain) occurs closer to 25C (77F), if you want to go fishing.

Compost is ready to use when is smells earthy and the ingredients are unrecongizable. Color should be very dark brown, almost black.

Temp. is not a very good measurement of compost being finished or ready for use. Many experts suggest a 'curing' or waiting time after compost is finished.

Well, all interesting responses.

I have a system I am building where the pile doesn't need turning. The pile was at about 150F for about 5 days and the temperature dropped to 100F after about 40 days. It may have happened faster but I didn't have enough water in the pile.

It turns out that the pile dropped to about 85F so I figured it was close to ambient temperature and there was no more material to burn and was finished. What I really want to know is when is the pile considered not hot and safe to put into the landscape.

That would be when the compost does not feel hot to you and smells like good, rich earth.
