Congrats on your decision to go green. Personally, I would consider starting a compost heap. It takes a few months for a compost heap to yield usable product, so in the meantime, distribute your lawn clippings over your grass. Here's a link to a basic article about composting. Mowing so you blow the grass clippings into the street is one of my gripes. I don't know how many times I have seen someone mowing their yard and the road covered with grass. This is completely unnecessary, unless you want your neighbors to know you finally got around to mowed your yard. They could keep the street clean and make no work for themselves by reversing the mowing direction. I start mowing at the street and blow the clippings into the yard. With the lawn mower you have a large "Leaf blower" so any grass that does get into the street can be quickly blown back into the yard with one pass of the mower at the edge of the street. Maybe the problem is caused by State laws (walk on the side facing traffic, etc.) and mower design. If it is then mower designers could easily switch the discharge to the opposite side of the mower deck and solve the problem. Personally I am to cheap to give my grass clippings away. I want every bit of grass in my yard building up the soil. In fact I have been tempted to ask the neighbors who bag their grass for the clippings for some poor areas of my lawn. While I don't have a means of transporting them I am so envious of the piles of leaves in my daughter's neighborhood, as I never have enough leaves for my flower bed. As for blowing leaves into the Street. In some areas that is perfectly acceptable at some times during the year as there is a city pickup of the leaves. Maybe they did not understand the pickup rules.

I think you have some very good materials there. I really don't think it have to be complicated science. Personally I would just put them down now, just mulch all your raised beds with them, I don't think it matters which goes first because it'll be composting over the winter and by spring time when it's warm enough for growing all the materials would be broken down. Problem with having a thin layer is that if you have just scattered stuff on top, they oxidized and dehydrates (if no rain) and doesn't compost well as in a big pile. It may be better to have grass clippings on top because it creates a good seal to keep the soil warm, retains the moisture and help the composting activities. If you were growing at the same time you put these materials down, I would put more broken down/composted materials down first, then the more green and coarse on top. Stuff like unbroken down woodchips can tie up the nitrogen in your soil a bit if you mixed in while it haven't composted. But since you mixed your wood shavings with chicken manure, and leaving it over the winter to compost, it is not a problem. I don't believe in doing all the complicated composting methods and separating things, organic matters is organic matters for me. So I would just throw them in. There is no such thing as a "silly" question except the question not asked. Never fear to ask a question because that is how we learn. Where did you read about that 4:1 ratio? The layering that Sir Albert Howard learned about at Indore from the Hunza's called for 6 inches of vegetative waste to 2 inches of animal waste, or a 3:1 ratio. Whether grass clippings would be a brown (high carbon) or a "green" (high Nitrogen) material depends more on age than on color because they lose Chlorophyll (what makes plant leaves green) quite rapidly. Grass clippings 6 weeks old may be brown in color but will still have a lot of Nitrogen while clippings a year old may well have lost both.
