Who Has Koko Loko Floribunda Rose?

I have to stop shopping at my local supermarkets-- too many tempting roses there for decent pricing. Got at my local Stop & Shop 'Koko Loko' for $12.99 for a 2 gallon pot with my store card.
The color of this rose intrigued me and I went home first and googled info about it before going back and purchasing it.

How disease resistant has this rose been in terms of performance?? I know its a fairly new 2012 Weeks rose introduction.

When does the latte color change over to lavender?? In extreme heat? or does it remain with this latte color?

This is my third year with Koko Loco and I love it! It has above average disease resistance, is winter hardy and blooms a lot! I think it's more lavender in cooler weather for me.

I am happy to hear this!! I am meeting with a bunch of Rosarians tomorrow and will ask them too what they think of this rose-- if anyone has it.

Thank you Seil & Patty! Unfortunately it looks like Angel Gardens and Northland sell Koko on own-root stock. I'm hoping for bare root/grafted, as I've had much better success with grafted plants where I am vs. own-root. The own-root roses I've bought have sat and sulked while the grafted ones (primarily from David Austin) have far surpassed them. This may have to do with individual varieties or other factors, I'm not sure (nor an expert, but I'm trying to learn!) but for now I'm attempting to stick with grafted roses when possible :) Another problematic factor is that the island I live on has no stores at all, and therefore no nurseries! The nearest nursery, accessible only by boat, has a pretty small selection. Sarah- thank you so much for reminding me about Christianson's!!! I've been there (what a dream) but somehow it never occurred to me to check their website for a rose list, duh! I will look into that (always eager for an excuse to make the trip and visit that place!)

She did get blackspot early in the season and defoliated but continued to bloom. Those first leaves were probably more susceptible to bs because of the late frost. The new leaves have mostly been clean. I have her in a really shady spot in the shadow of the house and a fence (like maybe only 2 hours of early afternoon sun). I also think I planted a coral bells way too close to her.

I presume that your Koko Loco plant was a grafted rose, bought from a local store or nursery or in a pot? What happened is that the top part of the rose (Koko Loko) died and the rootstock it was grafted on survived (Dr. Huey). This is a once-blooming dark red rose that gets pretty gangly and blackspotted later in the season. Most of us dig up Dr. Huey when he's all that's left of a rose, although there are people who like his blooms and keep him anyway. If you dig him up, be sure to get the little pieces of the root because the reason he's used as a rootstock is that he's pretty energetic at surviving if you give him a chance. This happens a lot with grafted roses, and there are a couple of things that can help this occur a little less often. One is that if you're in a cold zone, bury the graft (the knobby bit where the canes branch out at the base) at least 2-4" below the surface of the soil. Typically this is quite a bit below the soil levels where roses usually are when potted in stores. If you're in a warm zone, you may have to keep an eye on the rose you want AND Dr. Huey since he can sprout from below the ground even when the rose you want is alive. Some warm zone gardeners don't put the graft below the soil for this reason. Another way to avoid rootstock taking over is to buy "own root" roses, which have no rootstock and are the rose you want from top to roots. In cold zones this can have the advantage that the only rose that can regrow is the one you want and a lot of our roses die to the ground every winter. However, some folks find that a grafted rose is stronger going into winter, so they bury the graft and sometimes do some extra protection of the grafted area with mulch or soil or something. Some roses aren't very strong when grown on their own roots. My own root Koko Loko is OK but probably not as prolific as it would be if grafted. Hope this helps Cynthia

I adore Sweet Fragrance, one of my very favorites! Another Ping Lim rose that is not talked about much that I love is Grandma's Blessing. Bought it last fall at a university plant sale, bush wasn't much to look at but it was by Ping Lim and I wanted to try it. It is simply gorgeous!! A beautiful shade of pink with maybe a touch of coral, a bit different from the usual pink coloration. Photos do NOT do it justice. VERY healthy, blooms lots, very tall upright stems on the blooms. We have just had nearly 5" of pouring rain - trees are bending over, many of my poor roses are bending - not Grandma! Her one open bloom and many buds are as upright as soldiers. My only problem is which spot to I want to give to this beautiful rose. I may need to have a couple more. After all I have heard about Summer Romance, I was just going to give my potted one that I bought on sale at Chamblees a spot where it could just grow and not worry about blooms. Well.......it is just covered in buds! Maybe it will bloom in a big flush and then quit.......but I have to say I am elated to see such a bunch of buds on what I thought was going to be a dud of a rose - though its super healthy and grows like its on steroids. A rose that has just bloomed for me and I really like is Mango Veranda which might be similar to Easy Does It. It starts out a bright orange juice orange and as the bloom matures, it softens to a lovely apricot. I've had mine since around Feb I think. I LOVE this rose. Blooms start out a latte color, and change to a light lavendar (still with coffee hues). The bloom form is lovely. For me it's a workhorse and really hardy in its first year. Big winner for me.

It's freaking 90 degrees here already on LI at 11:20 AM and I just finished planting it. The soil was moist below the cedar mulch and I gave it a big drink of water before planting it. I am excited about this new rose for my garden from your responses. Keep those responses coming please! :)

My Koko Loko survived my zone 5 winters reasonably well, though it wasn't cane hardy. You shouldn't have any trouble in zone 7 LI. As for color, mine are still second year plants and haven't approached the stunning color range of Seil's picture (wowza!). As with most roses in the lavender/russet range, their colors will be deeper in cooler temperatures and/or with some afternoon shade. Don't be disappointed if it looks a bit washed out in 90 degree and higher temperatures - this rose has a changeable nature.

Have Koko Loko here in Chicagoland(z5) planted last spring and has been a disappointment to me. Lost half the plant (while mounded) over the winter and the colors are just okay to me. Honestly, my ten year old Distant Drums is similar in color but much more hardy and free flowering. To be fair, my Koko Loko is grafted and I don't have much luck with grafted.

Mine is in second year and doing fairly well. Only about 12-15 inches tall. Am hopeful for future. Awesome color and form. DD is taller and more vigorous for me, but the myrrh is not my fave.

How is the fragrance for Koko Loko? I want to get it and Distant Drums, but fragrance is a requirement for my garden

This is the first year for mine - it grew well and bloomed. Chamblees Rose Nursery has it.

I had it. It grew well but did develop blackspot in summer. I ended up giving it away to a friend & replaced it with one from the Kordes Parfuma series called Earth Angel — very disease resistant & very fragrant. I have a no spray rose garden.
