Has anyone grown Penstemon 'Iron Maiden'?

Hi,

I started seed from T&M this year for this plant and have six pots of them that I can't decide whether to use or not. I was hoping to attract hummers using them, but after having looked them up and found confusing descriptions, I am not sure. I didn't order the seed, they were an extra packet with an order. I have heard them described as pink and also as orange. Does anyone know which they are?

I also was hoping for experience with them...do they flop, bloom late in the season, bloom for very long, how do they look after they finish blooming? Thanks for any input.

I too got a free packet of Penstemon Iron Maiden seed last year with a T&M order. I grew and planted some but they didn't bloom that year. This year, however, they produced numerous tall spikes (3 - 4') of beautiful coral flowers in early June that lasted right into July. Not floppy at all, although they are somewhat sheltered from the wind where they are planted. I cut the flower spikes off after blooming and got some rebloom. Several friends have asked me for divisions so I'm not the only one that likes it. I would recommend it.

I started them last year, they bloomed this year. Despite my northern zone 4, they grew 3 1/2 feet and were dazzling from mid-June to mid-July. The hummers were late this year but I did see them visiting the flowers.

I planted them in very well-drained areas. A severe storm did break off a few stems, but overall they were very sturdy and upright.

I didn't have high expectations of this plant, was simply hoping they would survive our harsh winters, and was delighted at how well they did. Oh, the overwintering leathery rosettes of foliage have a wonderful red edge on them in fall and early spring, so they look nice even before they bloom.

Maggie: I've read the same confusing comments about the two forms of MB. It's probably safe to assume that one form sported from the other. (There's slightly earlier documentation for GMB.) Both roses have been grown for centuries. During their long history of cultivation, it's quite probable that reversion has taken place from time to time -- an occurrence that would certainly 'muddy the waters' for growers. For anyone having a distinct preference for one form over the other, I'd recommend ordering from a reputable vendor who carries BOTH. Vintage and Pickering are two who meet those criteria. Rosemeadow: Good luck with your roses! Peter Beales, the English rosarian, wrote a fascinating short piece on GMB and MB several years ago. It's included as a chapter in ROSES -- A CELEBRATION, a book edited by Wayne Winterrowd. I don't remember the publication date, but I think it was published around the year 2000. It's a collection of essays written by various people, each discussing his/her favorite rose.

Well, I guess no one grows this plant. I had not heard of it until I received a free packet of seed from T&M two years ago. I really like the plant so far, but it has not behaved according to explanations of what to expect that I have read online. It was supposed to bloom until fall, it was supposed to not bloom until August and it started in late May and is almost done blooming. It does look like the photos of it. Easy to start from seed and came through the winter fine and has managed to still look good after this horrible summer weather this year. A few of the taller stocks have gone over in all the storms, but everything still looks good and the shorter stalks are upright.

Thanks Scott et al for your insights on these. I have not (knock wood) had a big insect munching problem on my hostas. There is a small poorly leafed purple ornamental plum tree in the center of my hosta garden, and a large oak tree about 10 feet outside the garden, in the grassy strip by the curb. The large oak tree overshadows the plum tree and general area by the afternoon, so only morning sun is sort of more direct on my hosta garden. Last year, all my hostas did fine, as did impatiens and purple petunias, if that gives you any idea of the light level. Tiny hostas are fine, it's a small area. Empress Wu I don't need, heh-heh.

Well, Joe, I'm looking at your flower and wondering if it might not be a cross. As you correctly point out, the stigma is spotted and I just went back through all my pictures of papilios and not a single one has anything but a white stigma. Also ,looking at your picture your stripes appear to go out to the ends of the petals for the most part and also the color is more red. (that might just be your camera). Now, who would have given you papilio that you could grow from seed. It would have to have been someone who had two different clones or had a Doran strain and was able to get seeds but they would have been so excited I should think it would have been all over the forum unless someone from somewhere else gave you some seeds. Back about 3 to 4 years I made a cross of papilio Exotic Star which gave me about 20 seeds about half of them I am still have growing today but I don't think I would have given anyone any of these as they were my first great success. So, think back who gave you seeds. Houstonpat had loads of papilios, maybe he gave you seeds? Regardless, in my opinion from what I can see of your flower I would say it's a pap cross, but of what I don't know. I wait to hear what others have to say about this. Also, as I think back It may have been Houstonpat who had some papilios (Kristi too) that bloomed down in the scape. As far as using that pollen, I can't say whether or not I would, probably not as I have regular pap pollen but I suppose in a pinch I might, the choice is yours and keep in mind that it just might be a cross, not that that would really matter one way or the other. Well that is sounding encouraging. I winter sowed them last year and had great germination and potted up seven individual plants, so I am trying to figure out what to do with them. The only place I have enough sun for them is in the front of the house and I have been wondering if they are going to be a little too wild or messy there. It is in an open location that wouldn't be sheltered.

I was trying to think of something to plant them with that would complement them and tame their effect a little, but the color is throwing me off. I rarely work with that color. Photos I have seen, look quite orange to me rather than a coral or an apricot. Of course, we all know how different the real life color can be sometimes too. To use that color, I am thinking I have to keep all pinks out of the bed and I'm not sure I would even like a yellow with it. Purples or blues, maybe violets? I am not feeling very creative lately but I need to get these in the ground soon. [g]

The winter/spring rosettes sound attractive. Thank you both for the input. :-)
