How will Fair Bianca do for me? bs questions too

It was mislabeled as Tamora but when it has the metal label attached at the bottom. I was going to drive back to exchange it for Tamora, but I really like it so I'm keeping it.

How well will it do for me here in northern NJ?

Also, I didn't notice it till I brought it home, but there was a small branch/stalk thingy that appeared to have bs so I cut it off. I also noticed a couple leaves that could either have bs or simply have been burnt if watered at the wrong time of day. Any thoughts?

If it does have some bs, can I still keep it and spray and next year spray right away and then it won't have bs anymore? You can tell I'm a newbie when it comes to roses.

I like Fair Bianca, but not as much as Tamora. It blooms quite well in bunches. My issue with it is that it can ball and suffer from thrips. But when it does bloom, it's lovely. It stays small and the blooms are smaller than Tamora. I don't detect a fragrance. I spray, so I don't know if FB gets blackspot without it. But I don't believe I've ever seen any one it at times when I've been lax in spraying and other roses showed some BS.

It is a small growing Austin and a very pretty rose in bloom. It has the same myrrh based fragrance as Tamora, but not anywhere close to the same potency of perfume.

Unfortunately, it is very, very prone to BS, so that is most likely what you saw on its leaves. I removed it from my garden many years ago because it was always one of the first roses to exhibit signs of BS.

Austin doesn't have too many good white roses, but Clair Austin is an excellent white variety that is highly resistant to diseases. He also has a new white introduction this year called 'Susan Williams-Ellis' which is a white sport of The Mayflower and as such, promises to be an excellent rose. Particularly so, for the more northern growers as The Mayflower is exceptionally resistant to disease, is very hardy and blooms and repeats very well all season.

Hi - mad gallica, thanks - you replied to this over in NE gardening too. I'm going to post the same question about other options as I posted there, so it may seem familiar! :-) Hmmm, I did all this reading and found all good things about Fair Bianca, now am suddenly reading (here and elsewhere) not so great things about Fair Bianca. Ugh. What I'd like is a fairly compact rose with a good, strong fragrance for my front steps. It needs to have some shade tolerance. I'd prefer white, but a light pink might be ok too. My favorite roses have that cabbage rose style flower, but I like other old garden looks too (don't really love the HT pointy florist type rose flower). I'd like one with a continual or strong repeat bloom too. I know, I'm not asking much, am I? :-) Any suggestions??

Buford, yes, I cut all my roses back in the Spring. I've dealt over the 21 years we've had all our bushes with blackspot--mainly in the Fall, around October/November. Heritage & Fair Bianca have not been afflicted with any disease. Truly, they are the healthiest bushes I have ever had. Beautiful, not my favorite, but the healthiest. I did spray for BS last season in Fall on the bushes affected. My Heritage & Fair Bianca were not afflicted. The Fair Bianca I normally don't have issues with it getting floppy and needing to be held up at all. It's not as bad as Heritage. I think they are just taking off with all the rain we have been getting. Tons and tons of buds waiting to burst open though. I have a Pat Austin in another area in our yard. That one really gets floppy with the blooms. Again, pretty, no diseases on this bush either, but the thinner branches don't hold up the blooms well.

About Aliska's remarks on the costs of propagating roses and how you don't necessarily save that much, I think I do save money, and I have more time than cash anyway. Right now I have a couple of dozen or more little roses growing in my propagating beds that are from cuttings I was given last fall. I'll give away some of them and will probably keep about eighteen plants (I was counting them recently) of about thirteen varieties. Say about three hundred bucks to buy the ones I'm planning to keep. My costs are the ground I need to root them in, which I'm lucky enough to have, the frame of the cold greenhouse that protects them in winter, which gets re-used, and some sand and potting soil. Costs include the labor of planting and then watering and weeding the cuttings, but I think I can put these expenses under the category of entertainment, because watching my new roses grow certainly is fun. And this doesn't include the roses I'm going to give away. Propagating roses isn't principally about costs, perhaps, but I probably have 150 roses I've propagated myself in the garden, plus a fair number I've given to other gardeners. More important than money is the pleasure and the sense of control being able to propagate gives. I don't want to have to run to a nursery every time I want a plant. And, once you learn how to do it, it IS fun! I would consider myself only half a gardener if I didn't know how to propagate at least some plants. Melissa

cindaintx, Wow, thanks for noticing the windows. Quite a lot of thought needs to go into these things, doesn't it? We brought home a couple of tile boards, and think a 3X6 tile would fit there. Maybe a 1/4 round on top?? It will be a few months before we do anything. We really like the look of NO BS, and since we don't actually live at this home, we can be careful not to get the walls dirty. We'll see, and I'll be sure to post, when anything else happens! Window treatments are next! Probably just horizonal mini-blinds. Can't put a valance on that window because the corner cabinet almost meets the frame! Peach, I'm still liking that dark brown for the bottom row. It's not too "dated"? Thanks, ALL, for the kind comments. I posted on HGTV (rate my space" once, and got VERY critical remarks. Won't go back there! LOL

I love Glamis Castle another white Austin. But it is also a bs magnet.

thanks. I will spray it in a couple weeks once it's established. Tamora looks really nice too so I'll have to buy that one eventually.
