Repowering a GT235, engine question
Comments (16)Follow-up: For you gifted mechanics, this writeup is lengthy and you might want to blow off reading this. For the "combustion engine challenged" like me that prefer to DIY these things, it's a long write-up and maybe it'll help someone else out there... I swapped out the new engine for the old, for a non-mechanic like me it actually went fairly easy. I labeled wires as I disconnected them to help with the installation of the new engine. Getting the old engine off and the new engine bolted on with the pulley installed underneath took about 40 minutes. Much faster than I had anticipated, I was pretty shocked at how fast it went. That turned out to be the easy part! Wiring: My old -1134 voltage regulator had two yellow wires in and one red wire out. The new -1159 regulator had two yellow wires in and four wires coming out. I did a bit of reading and couldn't find any decent solutions that applied to my specific situation. So after spending an hour or so researching, I gave up and just swapped the two regulators, putting my old VR on the new engine. That took about two minutes. Starter: The old starter had a solenoid attached to it and a solenoid tab. The new didn't, so I swapped those out too. In order to get the old starter to fit the new engine I had to cut away part of the lower blower housing. The cuts are invisible after the upper blower housing was installed. Even though it was just a couple of quick slices with the grinder, I was slow doing it, it took me about 45 minutes to cut the metal, give the cut edges a shot of primer, then install the old starter. I did have a little difficulty wiring in the new anti-fire solenoid. I found wiring diagrams, etc, and knew what terminal on the ignition switch I was supposed to wire it to, but my ignition switch has a circuit board on the back of it so I had a tough time identifying which terminal was which. I found a reference that it can be on the same circuit as the battery charge light, so I wired it there, and I could hear it "click" as needed. It had power in the ignition "start" and "run" positions. Last thing? My old -1134 has an oil cooler, the -1159 does not. So I swapped that out, adding the oil cooler to the new engine. With all that done, I added oil, cranked it a few times, rechecked the oil, then fired the engine up. It started right up. Ran great at idle but would show signs of fuel starvation when the throttle was increased. Hesitation and a willingness to stall. When I pulled the throttle back to idle it recovered and puttered away just fine. First thing I found was the impulse tube that runs out of the bottom of the fuel pump was not clamped. there were two clamps on the tube, but in the middle. They were never slid down over the nipples. Figuring I had an air leak there, I reset the clamps, then fired up the engine again. No change. The new fuel filter was opaque, I replaced it with a clear from my old engine so I could get a visual on the flow of fuel. Fuel would never pool in the filter. It would pool maybe 1/4" deep max, but once the engine was started it would look just about empty. I could see fuel dribbling into the filter, wetting the filter media, then being siphoned up the media and towards the fuel pump. I checked for a kinked hose, a clogged hose, I swapped out the new fuel pump for the old, I checked all I could check. No change. Finally I went after the anti-fire solenoid. It was "clicking" as needed, but I pulled it anyway. Checked the voltage, it was fine. Checked that it as actuating, which it was, but not being familiar with them I didn't know how far the pin was supposed to travel. So I left it off the carb bowl and in its place I plugged the bottom of the bowl with the bowl screw from the old carb. The fuel filter was full of fuel. The engine fired right up, the filter remained full. Ran it through all rpm setting, no problems. Took the anti-fire solenoid to a JD shop, they bench tested it and said it was bad. Overall, a pretty good learning experience for me. Mongo...See MoreGT235: Briggs vs Kawasaki
Comments (32)The entire Briggs theory is apathy, same as a Craftsman Tractor. The thinking is that most people don't pay much for Briggs powered equipment, so it doesn't see any maintenance, and for the most part is abused; e.g. left outside all winter, no storage, fuel contamination and so on and it is really a shame to see what shops are quoting for repairs when they can get to them in September! Two cases in point just today: Two Craftsman tractors, a 1000 and a 2000 series. The 2000 I started in on first, a two-year old machine which would only run with the choke on last fall was subjected to outdoor storage, on Cape Cod with the crazy wind and driving rain all Winter. Long story short, with a crankcase full of water, the #2 connecting rod in the 20 HP Briggs I/C Plus broke. What a shame. It now has a 14 hp Kohler Command sitting between the frame rails, thanks to Craigs list. The 1000 is not so fortunate. The 14.5 hp Briggs Intek had no air air filer housing on it, and is packed full of water. No worries, I/m not an Intek fan anyway. Thanks again to eBay motors, a local pickup on a Vanguard twin was made and once again these nice machines will mow acreage. Flip these machines over and they are pretty much the same underneath. Sure some have a cast front axle and electric PTO's however they share the same powerplants and transaxles. My personal mower? A Deere (later model ) 317 with a Kohler and a hydro rear mounted tiller. Have a great one!...See MoreQuick Question re: GT235/B&S Engine--Help Appreciated!
Comments (4)Thanks for the quick responses. If this is indeed the crankcase breather hose (which certainly makes sense), I think it's probably still connected to the crankcase breather...I think I just need to insert the other end in the hole in the air filter assembly. Just so I'm sure about this, it sounds like I'm looking simply for a hole in the air filter assembly that's approximately the diameter of the hose, NOT a fitting per se., correct? And crankcase fumes travel through this hose, through the opening in the air filter assembly, so they're processed through the filter? Sorry if I'm sounding idiotic but I just want to make sure this is right. Thanks again in advance for assistance and I hope y'all are staying cool! Comments (150)Hi all - now that I am over the flu (not a bad bout just inconvenient!) and got a grip on the Principal at my daughters school - no, not around his NECK like I wanted! Bad deal with death/bomb/gun threat's against the cheerleaders - yes, my daughter is one - because one English class had to read a book about popular vs. non popular school mates. The teacher told them that the media was right in saying that it was understandable and some other B.S. about any kid that has EVER been teased, made fun of or any of other things that happen to us all as we grow up has the right to defend themselves with any means at their disposal. Then the discussion turned to bomb making and they all looked up how to make them with the teacher present on the net and then had a discussion on which one would be best in what setting!!!! Any way.... My daughter came home last week telling me that several students had a 'preppy B*&^%$es must die' list and pictures of a bomb, they had made. The Principal called a meeting with the students telling them that there was nothing to worry about and to just ignore what they heard - no need to involve the parents!! I contacted several of the other parents and we went to the Sheriff. The guilty party's that started this, the teacher & that JERK of a principal have been dealt with! GRRRRR.... Probably nothing would have happened but these things need to be dealt with .... The principal has NEVER called or spoken to any of the 'list' parents but did send out a letter saying that he has the sheriff's department involved... What a crock of **** Us parents are the ones that got them involved and are having them patrol the games! He didn't even have the ****'s to show his face at the football game on Friday and that was when the kids where planing to put their plans into effect! GRRRRR.... on to better things..... Melissa - yes I love the idea of having a "New Years Resolutions" swap! not that it would do me any good cause I alway fail at them LOL but it would be fun if someone else could tell us what the resolution would be, maybe do kind of a spoof resolution : ) Fran - Secret SANTA!!! has one YES vote! these are so fun :) I am all booked for October though - several swap here and with a craft group & my daughter volunteered me to help with homecoming, 2 concession stands each week of October and fund raising for the freshman class... Maybe if it is something simple I could do it though :) Have a great evening everyone - now I have to go find a Wyoming Cowboys Hat - daughter's boyfriend is having a birthday and that is what she 'haaaaasssss' to give him... being the Mom of a 14 year old girl is so much fun - ya right! I need to stop over at the MNF's and see what is going on for the weekend... I need a pool party with all the extra's! LOL Marie...See Moreedsacre
