value of a JD 318

I just picked up a 1989 318 for what I thought was a good deal from a friend of the family type deal, came with a 48" deck and a 49" blower. I was in a hurry when I picked it up and did not spend the time to look it over, but it does smoke on start up (not to bad) and spits sputters until it warms up then alls good. I only had time to run it about 3 hours since Ive had it, and only started it 4 times. Is this a major prob will it get me through the winter ?

And finally what would the value this tractor be

the smoke on start up is normally just to much oil in the engine....extreme would be cracked cylinder heads???

B43 (43 cu in) was the older points-ignition engine. The P218 or P220 ("Performer, 18hp, 20hp) were the later electronic-ignition engines. They are very smilar, but there are lots of small changes that make many parts not interchangable. To put a P in place of a B takes some modifications I think. But they are not huge. Neither is available these days as Onan/Cummins/Linamar no longer makes the engine.

The filter is mounted on the front of the tranny, just below the driveshaft between the engine and tranny. It is easy to get to if you remove the rear wheel cover (large metal body that the seat is mounted on), there are only 4 nuts that hold this on. just lift it over the mounts and slide backwards. Don't forget to disconnect the seat safety switch and allow the wires to go down through the hole under the seat!

You really don't want to pay to ship- so check local dealers that sell used parts, craigslist etc. You can also use the newer style 48" deck w/ help.

Value of JD425 (48') with 98 hours ?????

If it's truly only got 98 hours, and was kept indoors, that would make it in nearly new condition, for which I'd pay $4000-5000 with no attachments beyond the 48" deck. A comparable X700 is $9,500. This is the entry-level ultra-mower of the 90s (425,445,455). If you're looking for a garden tractor that is close to a CUT in capability, you can get a 3 pt hitch, a rear PTO, and even a front-end loader for this tractor. My uncle has been cutting his 5 acres for probably a decade with his, and I'm pretty sure he'll still have it 20 years from now.

Check on ebay to see what machines like yours are selling for. If it's blue smoke at start up and sputters some I'd check the crankcase vent, if it gets plugged up it'll cause that and the plugs may be fouled because of this. If the motor is a twin cylinder Onan, check the oil level and if it seems to be gaining oil or the oil has a gas smell, replace the fuel pump-change oil and filter.
