first time repair need suggestions

Hi- I have a Husq 2148 B&S elf 21hp. The tractor was hard to start and sound like the battery was low. I turned it off to eat lunch and came back and it was dead. I gave it a hot shot from my charger and it started right up. I just replaced the battery a while ago and tried to start it but only got turning or same sound( hard to describe). The light worked so it was receiving volts from the new battery. Still will grind but not start. Can it be the starter? Where is the starter located? thanks docrx

First: Make sure the + cable of the battery goes to the starter, through the solenoid connections, and the ignition switch. and the - cable goes to the frame of the tractor. Those marks are on the top of the battery. The (+) cable is usually red, and the (-) cable is usually black.
At this point, if you are seriously confused, might i recommend that you seek professional help! I say this, because, if you don't know where the starter is, or what it looks like, you will probably be taken for a ride by unscrupulous individuals, which will cost more money than if you take it to a reputable lawn tractor/mower repair shop!
In view of my being a lawn mower fixer, and not a Dr., I can truly say that lawn mower fixing is not unlike being a Doctor! We have to deal with mower owners who will be quite upset when we tell them their machine is either un-fixable, or just ready for the scrap heap.
It is extremely difficult to try to advise somebody thru this medium, especially when they don't know what the starter looks like, or its location! My advice to you is to seek a repair shop and let them fix it so it is usable. Cheaper in the long run.

Thank you Rusty for your quick response. After I wrote the post,I began to think like you regarding the starter,etc. Am making arrangements to have it p/u and repaired. docrx

ApprenticeGardener, Not to step on your toes or anything. But I don't agree with "but it's better (trust me) to buy a restored vehicle than to try to "bring" one back to life yourself--" A "restored" vintage tractor looks pretty, but doesn't necessarily mean that it is a better tractor than an old ugly one that has been sitting for years and looks crappy. And the biggy, the restored tractor will cost about twice as much! I'm an AC fan, since you mentioned that! LOL I have a lot of experience with old tractors growing up and through the years. I have found that the AC's are more user friendly and cheaper to buy. They are cheaper because the 3 point hitch on them isn't the main standard that everyone went with, the Ford style. So 3PH (quick hitch) attachments are harder to find. AC's are more dependable, in my homely opinion. They are not as finicky to start, especially after sitting a while. And they don't break down as much. My neighbors, friends, brothers, and my Dad had Fords, Masseys, JD's, ETC. I spent a lot of time every spring helping them get them started. Plus I had to repair hydraulic cylinders, pumps, starters, generators, magnetos, and other things for them. I bought an AC-CA, 1954 model, about 25 years ago that had been sitting in a field for about 5 years after the owner died. I drained and flushed out the gas tank and carburetor, stuck a new battery in and it fired right up. I bought it for $1000 , including a bush hog, harrow, drag harrow, layoff plows, planter, and other stuff. I'm still using it and it fires off every time I need it! The only thing I have had to replace/repair were the brushes in the starter and the generator. Back to the OP: Look around for an older tractor, search farmer bulletins, and estate auctions. I wouldn't recommend buying a tractor that has a magneto, such as the AC-B, unless you want to convert it to a coil system. The kits are expensive to convert, $200 the last time I checked, 20 years ago. LOL But if you are kind of handy I can help you convert it to a coil for less than $50. I have converted several. If you buy an AC with the quick hitch make sure that you are getting and/or can find the attachments for it. And as ApprenticeGardener said make sure the rubber is good especially the back tires, they are expensive. Good luck!!

Firs off, welcome Rebecca! I must say that the mix is probably the culprit behind the demise of your tree. Just the word 'SOIL' in a pot makes me cringe when it comes to the health of citrus and their vitality. Your mix should be very 'porous' and open to allow even the roots to breathe and better repair themselves. Gas exchange every time you water we call it. I think your tree is still very stressed, trying to hang on, and therefore the flowers, but not enough endurance or energy to hold on to its offspring/fruit. I would do a 911 repot as soon as you understand how mixes work in containers and come up with a good mix that will please both you and your tree. Let me link you to what I have learned before I go any further. I feel that first, you must understand the concepts or container mixes and how your plants will react to them and then fertilizer. Before you invest any more money into any others or replacements if that one should go, do this, and then you will be buying all kinds of citrus trees from so much success. Jalapenos and Cayennes are great peppers to start with. I would suggest some Hot Hungarian Wax as well. Easy to grow, good producers and a good mild to medium heat. If you buy and start from seed, stay away from the Ebay and Amazon.com suppliers. It is a crap shoot buying from them. Many are good but many are selling any old seed and labeling it as some of the more popular varieties. you don't realize it until many months later when your Ghost pepper seeds make Bell peppers. For you first year, I would just go with what I can find at the local garden center seed racks. If you are looking to start with starter plants, you should be able to get some good deals at those same garden centers as they try to clear out the left over plants for this growing season. If they haven't closed up shop completely already. Good luck and welcome to the forum. You won't find a better source for Pepper growing information anywhere on the web. You have hundreds of growers right here.

Hi lillivewire87: I would like to tell you a little story which may help you. Last spring, I lost all of my tomato seedlings due to an infection of some sort. I have been pre-sprouting my seeds and growing them on under simple canadian tire fluorescent lights for many years, so I thought I would have to head to a nursery, but a friend of mine told me not to. He said tomatoes grow very fast so you should be OK starting them now. It was May 17 when I set my seeds to sprout in paper towels on my TV box. Over May 21-25, they were all well sprouted, planted up into 4 inch pots and placed OUTDOORS. I planted Yellow Italian, Sophie's Choice, Red Beefsteak, San Marzano , and 42 Days. By June 24, they were healthy little seedlings, and were planted in the ground. My harvest was a bit late, started mid-August, but I had a full harvest, lots for salads and sauces, and still have some canned. I don't know what zone you are in and what your frost dates are, but I am in Zone 5a Ottawa. But that experience saved me lots of hassles: daily trips to the basement to water; making sure I watered with chamomile tea to prevent damping off; sprinkling cinnamon to keep fungus gnats at bay; and that most time consuming task of hardening off!! I have lost seedlings to hardening off because I forgot the seedlings out too long. I will not be growing tomatoes under lights anymore. You may want to consider this as an alternative and save yourself lots of work and worry. Good luck!!

When you seek the professional shop to address the problem, it's best you don't go in there and declare you are having trouble with your starter, or worse...........that you think you might have a bad starter. Either of those declarations could be taken as an authorization for the shop to replace the starter without testing anything first, and if/when that does not solve the problem, you might be told that you have some other problems IN ADDITION TO the bad starter.

You need to just tell them your engine is not CRANKING properly when you try to start it.
Tell them you replaced the battery "a while ago" (I still haven't been able to determine how long that is).

Mownie is SO RIGHT. Tell the service tech what the machine does (or doesn't do.) I'm "middling" good at fixing things, but I frequently find that what I thought was wrong turns out to be something else.

In your case, I SUSPECT a grounding problem much more than a starter malfunction. If you hadn't already turned it over to a tech, my first recommendation would have been to check that both battery cables are FIRMLY attached at each end.

Thank you for all the replys. All of you gave great advice. My neighbor is a retired policeman that likes to tinker with motors. I bribed him with a 6 pack if he would look the engine over,etc. He found a loose wire,hooked it up and it started. thanks again for you advice. docrx
