Rabbit Poop and Rotting Pine Shavings

If anyone lives in the Harrison or Chattanooga TN area, I have lots of rotting pine shavings mixed with rabbit poop that I will give you for free. This makes great fertilizer for newly planted WS seedlings in spring. Rabbit poop will not burn young plants like some fertilizers. Hope you don't think I'm weird! This stuff is also great for compost piles.

I have added Bunny Poop every year to my garden beds- and there is nothing like it for healthy happy plants!! I cant wait till I get them all amended with BP!!

Great stuff. My friend has 12 pet rabbits and gives me the same stuff for my compost bins. The worms (red wigglers) really love it and it does break down nicely.

The tarp underneath does not have (many) holes in it. I don't know if other people use tarps under their pile, it's just what I did. The tarp is there for multiple reasons: -Trap water: don't let the water drain off and steal the nutrients. I put a tarp loosely over the top so there isn't a large amount of water getting into the pile. Hopefully just enough. I also bunch up the tarp after turning so it doesn't stick out any more than necessary. -Ease turning: When I get to the bottom of the pile I just lift the tarp and pour it on the top of the new pile. I also pick up the corner while turning to consolidate the pile in the middle. -Keep roots out: previously I had a pile on the ground for several years. I didn't manage it or anything so it wasn't a good pile, but when I started paying attention and I turned it there were a ton of roots in the pile from the nearby pine tree. I didn't like that. luvidaho_2010, maybe your rabbit poo supplier would drive a load to Minnesota. $1 a bag is good for me.

I have beds that contained horse manure and pine shavings for over a year and the shavings have not rotted at all! I would say about 75% sawdust and 25% manure was the original concentration. Some of the beds are now just sawdust and shavings and I feed them other feeds to keep them going. The chips are just the bedding. They dont seem to mind, but I would rather have a bedding that they can eat like cardboard and paper and leaves, etc. as for the chicken manure just feed it like reg food and put it in a corner for them to eat as they like.

Thanks y'all for the quick response. I am going to get them tomorrow. Our show pigs probably have some antibiotics but not steroids. and I don't know if it makes a difference either. I actually was more worried about the pine. I am just looking forward to getting my trees mulched. we lost 8 year before last in drought and I am getting these set up so that doesn't happen again.

erinlisa- Your offer got me thinking about the nearby pet stores. Do you think their bunny/gerbil/chinchilla poop and shavings would be the right balance for my garden? How nutty would I be asking for their poop? Michigan is too far away from TN to come get yours. I'm sure you will get at taker either here or on the compost forum.

You are very generous to be offering it up! I guess your beds are already full of that "Bunny Power."

There's actually a group for givers and takers of bunny power! I've been signed up for at least a year, and I finally got hooked up (and not even through the group)--I feel like I won the lottery.

As I previewed this message, which included a link to the group, I was just alerted by a message from this site that I am not allowed to direct people to this group. They consider it spamming. That is very interesting, since I don't believe Gardenweb sells rabbit manure, nor facilitates the sharing of it, so I don't see how they are in competition.

Regardless, I will try not to get kicked off this site. I will give a hint, though: there's a free email provider that has a lot of groups. They may or may not have a group about Bunny Power. wink, wink.

I too looked at that site a year ago- and found the group in question- and found a neighbor(!!**!!) who raises bunnies posted in there-
We have become Tuesday Night friends as I bring empty lidded containers back to her and take the full ones right on over to my garden beds!!
We both think we struck the jackpot as her trash remover is not very fond of the stuff- and I come faithfully so not to cause a "stink" in the neighborhood!
I would give it a look-see and see if you have a neighbor in need......
