Has anyone tried Job's Tears (Coix lachryma-jobi)

I've been growing these for years now and they never have enough time to set seed. I've been starting these early and put them out after 2/3 weeks of growth (instead of direct sowing them). If it helps:

- I am in zone 5

- this is a type of ornamental grass similar to corn

- it will reseed in warmer climates, but I found a wintersowing site (probably Trudi's) that said they did not come up

- I am willing to experiment, I have more than enough seeds to try...and I will be experimenting, just wanted to know if anyone has experience WSing them

This will be my first year WSing and I've read through a LOT of the past posts here and I've practically gone through Trudi's site over and over again. Look forward to making lots of friends here :D I'm Kenny and I'm usually over on the Canadian Exchange forum

I grew these last year. I started them around the end of March and got a ton of seeds from the 5 that I planted. I'm in MA and as you can see there are a ton of seeds on them.

From a UK site. 25C = 77F Propagation Seed - pre-soak for 2 hours in warm water and sow February/March in a greenhouse. The seed usually germinates in 3 - 4 weeks at 25Â°c. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots. Grow them on in cool conditions and plant out in late spring after the last expected frosts. Seed can also be sown in situ in May though it would be unlikely to ripen its seed in an average British summer. In a suitable climate, it takes about 4 - 5 months from seed to produce new seed

I'm looking for these seeds. Has anyone heard of them here? Ms, Google.com is your friend. I just went there and entered Job's Tears seeds and many seed sources came up. I didn't realize that this was a perennial in warm zones. I have a few that are covered with seeds and I thought they'd die once they ripened. Maybe I'll stick them in the greenhouse and see if they make it. I also really like this grass. Karyn

I've WSed them and they sprouted and grew well. I only had to WS them once because they are excellent reseeders.

This was done in the spring last year, I was trying to mend a broken heart. My 15 y/o lab used to lay there and relax when he was outside.

From left to right strarting in the back is iris, chasing rainbows then jobs tears and a variagated lacecap hydrangea-blue, more jobs tears and stairway to heaven iris.

The iris in front of the back two on both sides is a var. iris called oceans mist (labs love water). Then the front plant on both sides is var. stairway to heaven jacobs ladder.

I was happy with the outcome of this mini garden.

Hi Kenny! Nice to see you in my favourite hangout! Never tried Job's Tears, but I grow sorghum as a tall, grass-like structure to centre my beds.

Here you can see a few spires to the right of the castor.

Neighbours kept inquiring about the "corn" I had growing! (p.s. everything except the geranium and sweet potato vine were started using the wintersown method.)

Hi Wendy, the sorghum looks almost as tall as the trees! Very impressive!
