Pic of my Jap Maple seeds planting

Ok, I know that due to all of the current traffic in here this thread will be on page 3 really quick, but I wanted to show my 25 little 4" pots with japanese maple seeds planted in them. The pots were filled with an 80/20 mix of potting soil and perlite. It's up to Mother Nature, now.

They are lovely EG. I think token did quite a few jap. maples last year. You two will have to compare pics. I wish I had the yard to start a few. Mines all filled up with baby lilacs right now.

I had one to germinate last year. It died a slow agonizing death from overpampering it. And too much sun. So make sure once they germinate, to move them into the shade. Looks good though.

If you go over to your friend's house about now, and if he hasn't been too careful about mowing under his tree, there may well be lots of little seedlings under the tree. If you dig them, with as much root as you can get, and pot them up (use potting soil, not garden soil, as more than about one third garden soil is too heavy a mix in pots), keep them in light shade, and water well, by summer's end, maybe a third, maybe more, of what you potted up will have survived. Pot them on and see what survives the winter - water anytime it's not freezing. Not all will, but you should end up with a couple of trees you like. You can repeat the process next spring. Just remember to keep moving them into bigger and bigger pots, within reason, as needed - check to see if the roots have filled the pots. Starting with seedlings, you don't have to remember when the seeds are ripe, and get out there before the squirrels get all the viable ones. If you do remember, then you can also sow seeds come fall, and be spoiled for choice.

Nin, The cracked bark and twig/branch dieback are the results of the Easter Big Freeze Disaster of 2007, complicated by the severe drought conditions we experienced last summer. I saw Japanese maples here- an hour north of Nashville - killed outright, though most were smaller than yours, but some had been in the ground for a number of years. Even well-established natives, like persimmon, pecan, and mulberry were killed back to ground level, so you're fairly lucky that your tree looks as good as it does. I'd prune out the dead wood, and within a year or two you'll hardly notice anything abnormal about your tree.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news. I'm sure your intentions are good. But there aren't seeds for cultivars of Japanese Maple. Thats a grafted plant. If someone has told you otherwise, you won't end up with 'Shaina'.

We picked up the tree today and wow was that interesting getting it prepared for the drive. They wrapped it in two queen size sheets to prevent it from burning or losing too many leaves. This tree is way bigger than I realized which is a good thing but it makes planting more challenging. We didn't get it in the ground today because we had to widen the hole a good bit. The root ball/cube is 24x24x24 and so our hole is 48" wide. I hope that's enough because this was a lot of digging. The tree will be just over ten feet once it is planted. Sometimes I wonder if this is too big of a job for just two people but we're making progress. Here is a picture (my husband wanted to be blurred out LOL). For size reference he is just over 6 feet tall. Did I mention that I love this tree?

Token - Ouch - only 1, huh? Good info about the sunlight. I'll definitely keep them in an area that only gets filtered sunlight each day. They'll be moved into bigger pots when germinated, too.

I've gotten them to germinate in the past but lost them for different reasons, mostly from being eaten. Finally got one through the winter outside in the ground and something ate it the next spring after it started to leaf out. It was still so small. I think next time I try, I need to put some kind of fine wire mesh over them to protect them from rabbits, or grasshoppers or whatever it is that thinks they're so tasty.

I sprouted several different types last year and have about 2 dozen seedlings now. I've got them in 1 gallon pots out under my fir trees. I hope most of them make it throught the winter.
