Wheelhorse 270-H

Hi Everyone,

I posted a while back that I could get a Wheelhorse GT420 for free from my employer...it had a blown engine in it.

Well, I finally made it down to the maintenance shed. It is actually a 1999 Wheelhorse 270-H (one of the other employees told me it was a GT420). It has a 48" deck on it. I don't know too much else about it other then they ran the oil out of it and the engine stopped working (20hp Kohler). It has sat in the shed for the past 2 years. Was this a good tractor? It seems fairly heavy-duty. I tried to look on-line for more info. All I could figure was that when it was new, it was at the top of the 200-series line of tractors. Was that a good line??

I brought it home yesterday. I'm going to bring it to a local mechanic to see if he can diagnose exactly what's wrong with it.

If anyone has any info about this tractor (quality, durability, value, etc) I'd appreciate it. Also, your opinions on whether or not it's worth putting a new engine in it (if that's what it needs).

I believe, I'd play around with it a little ... see if the engine is free to turn, fill the crankcase with some light oil or kerosene, and see if it kinda does what it's supposed to. If so, I'd drain it and put some oil in it and see if it will fire-up. Go from there.

Before I get bumped to the second page...does anyone out there own this tractor that could share any info about it?

On the XL style decks I can think of 2 springs. One that is attached to the end of the cable that goes to the deck idler arm. There is also a return spring that pulls the opposite direction on the arm and hooks on a kind of s hook that hooks through a hole near the left rear of the top of the deck. Sometimes those drop away. Yours may be new enough to have an eyebolt rather than the s hook. In either case an s hook or eye bolt from the hardware store will work- possibly needing a spring extension depending on what version you have.

"Wow, a two horse show! I m sure the list will welcome your unbiased comparison with the Deeres. I suspect they are in many ways comparable." I know, I'm becoming a true collector now, with several JDs and now 2 WH's. The 314-8 is closely similar to my '79 JD 210, i.e. heavy duty, cast iron gear drive transmission, the mechanical pto set up, the way the belt is routed to the deck, they heavy duty frames, and the solidness of the tractors themselves. I need to get the carb cleaned on the C141 and maybe a rebuild on the Kohler engine so I can better rate it, but right now I would called it a water-downed version of the JD 120/140 or maybe an older JD 300 series tractor. But, my opinion may change when I get her running better and use it more.

the 200 series IMO are decent machines, not up to the 300 series for sure, but still good.
The price is right thats for sure. I would only put a new engine in it if the rest is mint.
You might be able to free it off. Take the head off and apply oil to the cylinder. Gently tap on the top of the piston with a block of wood and see if it moves. If the bore is scored up its a goner. If it doesnt move with taps from the wood, its probably a goner.
Best idea would be to drop in a good used engine.
