I have replanted in the same place many, many times, but I've always waited a year.

The one rose that kept coming back had been in the same place for about a hundred years (based on the remembrance of a neighbor in his 90s who had been caught by the paired thorns at the base of each leaf node when he was pushed into the mature rose as a little boy.) It had roots going out fifteen feet into the yard and it kept sprouting RRD sick growth for 18 months after we removed the original bush.

Give yourself at least through the rainy period next winter and early spring growth. And watch like a rose hawk.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I will be a rose hawk - I warned my neighbor, who has many of the Austin roses, and am going to recheck all my roses after I dig up Wind Chimes.

Given where it is located in my yard, I would have had to use the herbicides and I haven't. It really is not reachable from any neighbor's herbicide, and the three neighbors I have are completely organic, and wouldn't use herbicide if they had garlic mustard in their bedroom.

You do not have to reply, but I just want to mention this as I have seen several cases where people at first claim no herbicide (apparently thinking only of Round-Up) but on further questioning admit that they do utilize a lawn service which applies a weed and feed type product to their lawn.

You are, of course, correct that it could have been from a lawn service, but neither I nor any of my surrounding neighbors use any such service. The rose in question is surrounded by other roses, is 20 feet from my lawn and 12 feet from my neighbor's lawn, and any herbicide that hit Wind Chimes would have to have hit many other plants on the way there.

I have been replanting right away. The disease is not in the soil but only in the old plant. If you clear a hole of roots at least 24" wide and 18" deep, any infected suckers from the old roots should be far enough from the new plant that you can deal with them separately. I recognize there may be a possibility of infection by root grafting, but I have no spare room in my small garden and I'm too old to wait an extra year.
