Bright, deep rose colored perennial?

I am looking for a bright, deep rose colored perennial to replace purple loosestrife (which is not purple to my eyes, but a bright deep rose).

I did get some hyssop/agastache today, but the one I am after they did not have - Summer Love. I did get Tutti-Frutti, Blue Fortune, Summer Fiesta, and Pink Pop (I think that is it's name).

My friend has a plant that has bright deep rose flowers that open in a star shape and she thinks it is the same as the post I did earlier where everyone thought the other plant I found was purple loosestrife, but her's is not as tall (18" compared to 30" or more, and the leaves are a deeper green. My friend's is growing upright and confined (not floppy).

I once had a lobelia that was a bright deep rose. I lost it to a vole invasion, but it would probably be a good substitute for purple loosestrife. Lobelia is supposed to be good for part-shade, but I had it in full sun (moist, rich soil) and it did fine.

Thank you Wendy. I did a search and found perennial lobelia 'Monet Moment' that looks like it has a rich pink color. The shape of the plant is not what my friend has, but it could be one I will try to find.

Does anyone know of a website where you can hunt for perennials by color?

Wow, light yellow, pink, white and soft green are an awesome combination, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks, aardvark! And I totally agree with you, the screen door is AWFUL and is going to be replaced with a nice period door from Van Dykes Restorers ASAP. You can't really see it in the photo but the front door (the white one) is original and has some really cool stained/painted glass done in amber and yellow. Maybe those will stand out more with yellow flowers in the garden! Everyone, thanks so much for all of your suggestions. It looks like I'm going to have a bit more time to plan than I had initially anticipated, as the gas company is apparently going to be digging in front of my house this week....argg! I'm glad this is happening BEFORE I planted all sorts of things, not after, but still - what a pain!

Thank you for the ideas! (and sorry for the delay, I'm having internet issues). May Night - I love MN, but I have it *everywhere* (maybe because it goes with everything, lol). Moonbeam is supposed to be hardy here but I have not been able to get it to come back, nor have many of my friends. It's been a huge disappointment to me. I'm not usually a fan of lamb's ears, so hadn't thought of it, but you're right, that might go VERY nicely. Nepeta, again I have several places. I do like it, it seems a bit tall for the roses, but I just saw some smaller varieties, maybe I will give them a try (Kit Kat was one, can't remember the other name). I've read about Rozanne a lot here on Perennials, but haven't tried it. It's on my list of "must try", so maybe one of the rose beds is a good place to try it! The Russian sage and white phlox look great too. Beautiful pictures, definitely has me thinking. Thank you all for ideas! Ann

I tried Lobelia to try to attract hummingbirds, but they didn't come back for me after the first winter. I have clay but my garden is a really dry garden due to many Silver Maples in neighboring yards. Before I understood that I also tried Astilbes and I think I have one left that is barely hanging in there. I have brown edges on the leaves of a Viburnum, this year, even after all the rain we had. Never have a puddle in my yard either, no low spots for a little patch of Lobelia. I am wondering about a plant that is a bulb that looks like a tapered bottle brush and comes in hot colors. I can't remember the name of it, sorry.

the best sub for purple loosestrife that I have found is a certain tall astilbe....
I have forgotten the name, but it shouldn't be too hard to locate.

Thank you Linda for the suggestion of astilbe. In fact, yesterday when I was hunting the hyssop I saw astilbe and wanted to check them out but got distracted by something else. I guess I will have to make another visit to the garden center. Darn. : ) By the way, your link takes me to 'alibris' which looks like a site to buy books. Is there one in particular you wanted me to see? I will do a web search on astilbe. Jane

I looked at online pics of Monet Moment and it doesn't look as bright as the one I had. Mine may have been Fan Deep Rose. Ignore the purple that snuck in there.

I'm just trying to brainstorm perennials that have spikes of pink/lavender flowers....Salvia, Veronica, Liatris, Gaura, Stachys, Nepeta, Epilobium(Fireweed), Phlox, not a spike, but full of pink flowers... that's all I can think of right now.

Offhand, I can't think of too many spikey ones. I tried seeds of two plants but failed this year. One is at the useful link, Verbena hastata Pink Spires.

Also swallowtailgardenseeds.com has a lovely monarda (listed under Bergamo, no common name listed, new for 2009) I just love, failed with that, too. Also swallowtail has a nice Veronica Pink Goblin. There's another nice bright or rosy pink Monarda, Marshall's Delight or something like that.

Maybe run thru Bluestone Perennials and see if you can find anything there. Those you wouldn't have to start from seed.

I checked Salvia or meadow sage but don't find any intense pink varieties.

Also as mentioned above, I think Bluestone has a color search function.

What about tall phlox, asiatic and oriental lilies, and dahlias for tall pink? There are also pink salvias - altho to me they look purplish

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am checking each one and have found some promising choices.

aliska - I have grown monarda in the past and need to rethink that one. Mine definitely were upright, and I know there is a deep, intense pink/rose.

futura - Now I want to visit MBG. I just touch a small sample of what is on their website, and I will be going back for more. Everyone should take a look at this site. I did a google on MBG and an url came up about a plant data base, but I did not check it out yet, because I have to take my morning stroll in the garden before I leave for work. There are many, many, many daylilies blooming now.

I will let you all know what I find.
