mixed lettuce container

I just sowed my first container. I sowed a tray of golden milkweed. The container is clear plastic with an attached lid.

I think there might be a problem when and if the seeds germinate. There is only about an inch from the soil to the cover.

What is the best container to use, are gallon containers the favorite?

You do need some "head room" for those babies when they get going/growing! If you read the FAQ and posts you will get lots of ideas for containers. The gallon milk/water jug being the frontrunner - free and easy to get. I would recommend no less then 3-4 inches in the bottom part for soil and at least that for grow room in any container you are evaluating.

Milk jugs were my favorite last year. I used 2L bottles for the annuals that sprout quickly, and don't stay in their container very long. Even using the milk jugs, there were several that were growing out the top by the time I got around to planting them out!

I sow mixed lettuce directly in the 5:1:1 every year. I use those long narrow deck planters - they're prolly about 3' long, 8-9" wide and about as deep as they are wide. I mix the seeds with about 1/4 cup of sand & sprinkle it over the top. I water daily until they start sprouting, then as needed. I use FP 9-3-6 as a fertilizer. Al

In my new cold frames this year, I tried growing lettuce in one of those under-bed storage boxes, the opaque kind (without the cover, obviously). It has about 4 to five inches of soil in it, and the lettuces are doing well. I do cut mine at the baby stage. I work with a woman who sells lettuces at the market, and she starts her trays in the greenhouse, and sometimes they kind of get away from us (i.e. we don't always get the seedlings planted out!). The lettuce did so well in those flats that we decided to sell mixes and grow those in the greenhouse, in regular flats. Can't help you about the amount of sun, but I would give it a try. That sounds really good. I love olive oil and balsamic vinegar and of course I love fresh garlic (others in the office might disagree ;), but I never thought of combining with a spicy mustard which I also love. Definitely gonna try it

Lettuce can also be mass produced easily and cultivated in even smaller pots like a small plastic drinking cups or yet smaller net pots in any self-watering planters or diy simple hydroponic or soilless growers. With hybrid soilless and hydroponics horticulture methods, the growing medium can be made of anything, including potting mix, pea gravels, perlite, or strips of jeans, and is secondary as long as the material can minimally support plant roots structurally. There are some variations in how each soiless method or grower deliver moisture, nutrients, and air to the roots, but they all work off utilizing similar horticulture principles and objectives of growing healthier plants more simply and efficiently with less by feeding the roots directly with nutrients and air.

I save those mixed lettuce containers and put two bottoms together with a "hinges" of two pieces of duct tape. After poking holes in the top and bottom and planting it, I use one small piece of tape to hold the front together.

I think they make a perfect planter --- too bad we don't eat more lettuce!
