May Night Salvia, where to prune, photos

I have a more specific question about pruning my Salvia. When looking at the big picture of my flowers the foliage looks OK.

When you get closer you see all the awful foliage on the inside. (My gardens are loaded with slugs!)

I have cut back about 1/2 the blooms just below the spent flowers. Would you cut just the spent blooms or cut the plant down closer to the ground and hope for new growth from the base of the plant? How do you cut back your Salvia? And, what is your favored method of getting rid of slugs. They are in all my gardens like the plague!
