Small Washington Hawthorne (Pics(of course))

Got twigs for free from arborday foundation. I believe this was a Washington Hawthorne.

I plan on transplanting & doing major staking in Fall I guess. I need a good spot for this. It's so hard to pick a spot. 25-30' tall and wide! Would have loved right in front of Arbovitaes but it'll shade them. Sucks.

Yeah, that's no hawthorn. I can see that being a goldenrain, as they get everywhere and one in the neighborhood means dozens.

You could try planting some insect repellent plants (there is a big list on Wikipedia). The thing is really, if you have many of one plant, then the insects will find you, and easily move from one plant to the next, in what they see as a great big buffet. But if you have lots of different plants between each other, the insects gets confused, because they really just want to eat their favourite meal, and do not want to smell something they think is yucky, while munching away on the good stuff. There are many hundred kinds of aphids alone, and they all have different tastes. The ones that like roses, will not necessarily touch tomatoes etc. That, and an insecticidal soap might be of help. You could also try and catch some ladybugs. Then in the evening (where they tend to fly around less) you can place a bag over an infested plant, and release them in there, and see if they won't discover the feast you have laid out before them. Then remove the bag later on as gently as possible, so they don't get disturbed.

i dont have any clue.. why it is an issue??? what.. if your plant isnt 100% perfect.. its carp and has to be put to death?? you should fell lucky your wife doesnt hold the same views.. regarding her spouse.. crimminey ... ken ps: so what if a crab has fire blight so what if the hosta have some slug holes so what if .. so what.. so what ... its not like we are talking about production of salable fruit.. and require perfection ... its like you want to live and garden 'in nature' .. but when she gives you the 'natural effect'.. you reject all and try to fight it.. whats that all about.. i suggest you nuke the yard with thousands of gallons of chemicals.. so you can live in a near perfect .. plasticized environment.. which basically.. has NOTHING TO DO with reality ... end of daily rant .. thx for allowing the opportunity ... pps: if you dont want the fruit.. kill it ...

The reason it was replanted at this time is because his friend is moving, and his friend dug it up from his yard for him. It was in perfect condition when it arrived here. The root ball was approx 1 ft in diameter. While I was helping him, my neighbor did express the concern that it had not been dug up carefully enough.... It was well watered, and mulched, immediately after transplanting. As for your remarks about soil moisture, I believe that he has not been very careful about this, and how he has watered it in respect to soil dryness or wetness. I will tell him to shade it immediately. Since it has been transplanted, it has been in bright sunlight for most of the day. Luckily the little guy is having a break from the sun today, as we are having a good soaking rain. Can a part of this plant be propagated, given it's unstable condition?

I get cedar apple rust on my supposedly disease resistant adirondack crabapples and my autumn brilliance serviceberry lots of junipers in my neighborhood adirondack crabapples are supposed to have superior resistance but they do actuslly the worst in my yard … with that said, they were also most recently planted of my crabapples and probsbly stressed… i had no blooms last year (2021) so no fruit either Interestingly, i have zero problems in terms of cedar apple rust with my Sugar Tyme and firebird crabapple, they do GREAT i was windering what all that orange gooey stuff was on my junipers but we have since removed the trees … still theyre all over the neighborhood the disease affects my mcintosh apple tree too bummer, i’m guessing the hawthorn tree is probably not a good idea for my yard i was reading that a blackhaw viburnum is a good alternative to the hawthorn…no thorns but similar growth habit

Ahh yes! You're right. Golden Raintree. I had tagged them but "permanent" marker washed off. Go figure. I gotta search this now find a good spot. Thanks guys

Arbor Day Foundation continues to send out golden rain trees as a part of their "flowering tree package." Surely they must know about its reseeding issues, especially in the south?...I wonder why they do that?

You guys got me thinking now about the re-seeding issue. I guess it's not the fact that peopple let them grow into a mature tree but the weeds per-say on the ground?? Otherwise doesn't every tree have seeds fall down??

Maybe I'll pot this thing and sell it in 3 years. I have a nice spot but neighbors might hate it. lol

I had awful seeding problems with golden rain tree - I was constantly pulling them out of my beds and even from my neighbor's house. It was a real pest.

For all the talk about Golden Raintrees, it's surprising they aren't considered a true invasive in more locations.
