Compost looks like horse apples Whats wrong?

Hi everyone...

I'm one of those people that spent a fortune for a compost bin. In 2 years of doing this, all I have gotten is compost that looks like horse apples! It gets hot, stays there, and then whammo...one day it wads up into these big balls. I have been putting them under shrubs, and eventually they break up, but what can I do so that doesn't happen?

I mostly have grass clippings, sawdust...(lots of it) and whatever scraps I get from in the house. Can I use paper for 'browns? I have a bag of shredded paper insullation..??no good to use it?

Come fall, I use mulched leaves also. But they don't get hot, and never compost.

Thanks,

Marcia
