OT: Cherry Brandy Rudbeckia

I started some of these indoors to test the germination. 1 out of 6 seeds germinated under lights on bottom heat. I'm concerned. The seedling is putting out its second set of leaves, and it still incredibly tiny. Anyone else starting some of these indoors?

Must be casue they are in side vs out side in a milk jug.

Why would you not winter sow them?

I'm anxious to get them going. I traded and gave away some of the seeds and I want to fill an area with what I have left. I also want to take cuttings before spring so I can have more. I do plan to wintersow a few, but most I will start indoors. I'm not comfortable with them yet as they are a new variety.

I've got 4 seedlings from about 20-25 I sowed. I used the best dirt. I watched the moisture and made sure it didn't dry out. They were in dappled shade and have been through several 85+ degree days. They should have germinated by now if they were going to. I'm not impressed. If they're late, fine, but to not show up at all, they shouldn't have made such a fuss over these things when they released them. My R. "Autumn Colors", R. "Green Wizard", and seeds I collected from various sources have all done great. Even my echinacea are up and planted out. Echinacea paradox is almost as large as the ones coming back from last year. My cherry brandy seedlings, I have to get on my knees to make sure they haven't rotted away.

A hybrid has an "x" symbolizing it is a "cross" between two species. The only place I saw the "x" being used is on T&M website. If it is a hybrid, I'm curious which species are the parents of Cherry Brandy? Many seed websites don't specify the species of their seeds, some don't even tell you the botanical name, just the common name. This drives me nuts, because I am a stickler for knowing the species of flowers I grow. I think Cherry Brandy might be a cultivar of Rudbeckia hirta, like 'Indian Summer' and 'Prairie Sun'. But not sure.

You can prop ruds by cuttings?! Do tell (sorry, going OT on the forum again...this time I'm the instigator- DOH!)

Take cuttings of the stems. Last year I did echinacea this way. Make sure you have a couple of leaves and strip off the rest. Then stick it in a container with good fast draining potting mix. I usually just use plain sand for cuttings cause it seems to work better with less rot. Cover to contain humidity and sit in a shady spot. Took about 6 weeks for the echinacea using no rooting hormone. I figure I will need to use the hormone on the CB Rudbeckia to get enough plants. Or put them in the cloning chamber.

Many perennials can be propagated from cuttings just as you would a shrub. Annuals too.

Just did some checking. Rudbeckia indoors can take 4-6 weeks. Hmmm... Maybe the one that germinated was early and will be weak which is why its so small.

I don't do any indoor seed starting. But I've had terrific results with any ruds that I've wintersown. Clothier says "Sow at 20ÂºC (68ÂºF), if no germination in 3-4 wks, move to -4 to +4ÂºC (24-39ÂºF) for 2-4 wks". You might do better wintersowing them.
