Comments (26)Start with the basics. Air, Fuel, Spark. One time I had "surging" the air filter was dirty. Before that it was the fuel cap; centering the gasket solved the problem. Most recently it may have been only hot humid weather (vapor lock?), but cleaning the exhaust recirculation port in the air cleaner and repairing a leaky fuel hose seem to have solved the problem. Surging seems to be due to a cumulation of problems, and simple fixes may have more effect than adjusting the governor or carburetor......See More25HP Briggs and Stratton Surging/Hunting Problem
Comments (1)I would try adding a little choke and see if that smooths it out. IF so, it is fuel starvation which is what it sounds like. IF so, did you check for leaks where the manifold attaches to the heads? Might try some SeaFoam in the Fuel. Also check the gas tank vent AND the gas tank outlet, is it running freely. Comments (1)Well that would be a 31 or 33 series engine, doesn't really mater in this case since they are basically the same design. Extremely unlikely cam has gotten out of time unless you removed the sump. I have two suggestions, I can send you Detailed Instructions on adjusting the valves and or a Service Manual IF you like.
